Realityworks is seeking a Technical Writing Intern to join our Engineering team in a hands-on, paid internship. The Technical Writing Intern will be responsible for collaborating with cross-functional teams, primarily engineering, quality assurance, design, project management, and marketing to produce high-quality, accurate, and concise product specification documents, technical manuals, assembly procedures, and other technical documentation.

This internship, located in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, will begin January 2020 with an opportunity for continuation through the summer of 2020. Flexible scheduling is available to accommodate class schedules. Students will work 10-20 hours per week during the spring semester and 40 hours per week during the summer months is preferred.

  • Designs, develops, writes, edits, and verifies technical and end-user documentation, such as product requirements documents, technical specifications, and controlled information (e.g. BOMs (Bill of Materials), assembly procedures, and technical manuals
  • Researches and transforms complex technical concepts, specifications, and procedures into user-oriented information for non-technical and technical audiences
  • Ensures technical documentation is accurate, complete, and meets editorial standards for spelling, grammar, paragraph structure, document formatting, and defining technical requirements in written format
  • Utilizes effective communication and information gathering skills to create documentation and meet project deadlines
  • Takes digital photos to support and clarify technical instructions
  • Tracks and fixes documentation deficiencies
  • Analyzes documents to maintain continuity of style and content
  • Adapts and follows project schedules and deadlines
  • Performs other additional duties as assigned or required


  • Excellent grammar, clerical and proofreading skills
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret written documents and reports
  • Ability to effectively present information in written, verbal, and presentation form
  • Ability to effectively analyze and resolve problems - assess a situation, gather data, analyze the data, propose a solution
  • Ability to work both individually and as part of a cross-functional team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills Strong attention to detail

  • Actively enrolled in a Bachelor’s Degree program, majoring in Technical Writing, Engineering or a related program with coursework in technical writing
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Proven experience working in a technical writing position
  • Experience writing and editing technical documentation
