JOB SUMMARY
- The Universal Technician I is a customer-facing position that is responsible for all aspects of the installation of the fiber and coaxial drop system from the tap to the end user device in the customer’s home. This includes the outside drop, activation of the drop, proper NEC grounding, proper signal termination, placement of all electronics in the home to include splitters, routers, modems and phones, customer education on specified home premise equipment and wreck out and removal of abandoned cable on the home.
- The Universal Technician I is the first step in the progression to Universal Technician III.
- The Universal Technician I is required to transition into a Universal Technician II within 3 months.
- The Universal Technician I is required to pass the following NCTI courses: Installer and Consumer Digital Electronics in order to advance to Universal Technician II.
- The Universal Tech I reports to the Technical Operations Supervisor and has no direct reports.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The Universal Technician I:
- Plans network installations by studying customer orders, plans, manuals, and technical specifications;
- Prepares installation diagrams;
- Completes the basic installation of new connects, reconnects, disconnects, customer premise equipment (HD/DVR/DIG), wall fish, additional outlets, and rewires as assigned daily in an accurate and efficient manner;
- Installs HSD and wireless;
- Installs fiber to the home, including Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and streaming devices;
- Reads system design maps (blueprints);
- Documents network by labeling and routing equipment and cables and recording configuration diagrams and specifications;
- Employs basic troubleshooting and diagnostic strategies to resolve service issues and test network back-up procedures;
- Verifies service by testing circuits and equipment;
- Identifies, corrects, and/or escalates issues to the Technical Operations Supervisor, Maintenance, and/or Dispatch;
- Drives a company vehicle to and from various job sites;
- Safely operates all equipment essential to complete work, including but not limited to extension ladders and bucket trucks;
- Maintains inventory of all equipment in their possession;
- Conducts inventory on supplies, places orders, and verifies receipts;
- Follows the company’s policies and procedures, including the EEO and safety guidelines, at all times;
- Other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience
- High School diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent – required
- Formal electronics training, NCTI, SCTE Certification or equivalent - preferred
- 12th grade level math skills - preferred
- 1 year of previous experience in the Telecommunications industry – preferred
