Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent; supplemented by phlebotomy training, medical laboratory training, one years of experience in a similar medical position; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Specific License or Certification Required: None.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.
Example of Duties
Purpose of Classification:
The purpose of this classification is to prepare and process samples within a pathology laboratory. Pre-analytical systems are used so that biomedical tests can be processed on the sample. The duties of this position include running lab tests and preparing specimens. Some common medical laboratory assistant tasks also include planting microbiology specimens, performing routine and specialized tests, preparing and staining slides for analysis, performing phlebotomy, recording testing information, cleaning and restocking the lab facility, keeping inventory, and ordering lab supplies.
Essential Functions:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Sets up blood analyzers, running quality and manual controls prior to undertaking analysis on samples.
Maintains and decontaminates the machinery therefore MLAs carry out this role on a weekly or monthly basis.
Performs routine laboratory tests, such as urinalysis and phlebotomies, and collects and centrifuges blood samples.
Checks and records daily temperature of incubators, freezers, and refrigerators.
Collects blood and other specimens for testing.
Checks patient's vital signs, including height, vision, and hearing.
Cleans, maintains, and sets up laboratory and medical equipment.
Records and reports laboratory results.
Organizes and maintains supply inventory and schedules patient's appointments.
Initiates databases and intake procedures.
Additional Functions:
Performs other related duties as required.
