HMC INTERPRETER SERVICES has an outstanding opportunity for a full time day shift MEDICAL INTERPRETER 1 - VIETNAMESE INTERPRETER. This individual performs interpretation services to patients who have limited English skills, enabling the patient(s) to access medical care. The Medical Interpreter will provide spoken language interpretation to patients, medical providers, and staff, which includes sight translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpretation.
Under general supervision, the Medical Interpreter I performs interpretation services to patients who have limited English skills, enabling the patient(s) to access medical care. This position requires proficiency in oral and written English and Vietnamese languages. The Medical Interpreter I will provide spoken language interpretation to patients, medical providers, and staff, which includes sight translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpretation.
Provides interpretation for target languages.
Provides sight translation in the presence of provider and/or other medical staff.
Provides accurate rendition of a written text in one language to an oral message in another language.
Provides spoken language interpretation, in person, by telephone or video to:
Transmit information accurately between patient and provider or staff
Encourage direct communication between patient and provider or staff
Manage complexity of cross-cultural encounter
Utilize/integrate ethical practice to guide behavior in all interpretation
Follows the Interpreter Services Department Standards of Practice.
Consults with provider prior to encounter.
Assesses patients’ interpretation needs.
Explains and clarifies cultural behaviors.
Assists patient to complete medical, financial and/or other forms.
Demonstrates personal commitment to meeting communication needs of customers.
Assists and participates in translation projects.
Is willing to take advantage of other shift opportunities for scheduling purposes.
Maintains confidentiality while utilizing computerized patient information systems.
Performs usual office tasks as needed.
Maintains and uses supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner.
Confirms patient appointments by calling clinic and patient prior to appointment, as directed.
Answers and directs telephone inquiries, takes and directs messages accurately, demonstrating courteous, professional telephone skills.
Appropriately directs patients and others to other departments across the medical center.
Acts as an advocate for the patient/family through such activities as assisting with locating appropriate staff to address concerns, and safeguarding patient’s privacy and confidentiality.
Demonstrates an atmosphere/attitude of respect for human dignity and the uniqueness of each person encountered in the clinic/unit setting.
Promotes and protects general safety for patients/families/friends and co-workers through measures such as adherence to correct procedures, accurate, timely communication of messages and test results, and appropriate consultation.
Acts promptly and effectively during an emergency situation.
Participates in and supports quality assessment and improvement activities.
Maintains/improves knowledge and skills related to medical interpreting, medical terminology, policies/procedures, medical center services, use of work equipment and supplies through use of appropriate resources to meet identified learning needs.
Completes new employee competencies, consistently completes annual competencies and attends department specific in-service educational offerings.
Supports development of department and divisional efficiency and effectiveness through activities such as:
Participating in departmental, clinic and divisional problem-solving
Demonstrating support for department and divisional policies
Contributing to selected department projects and committees
Provide interpretation for target language(s)
Provide sight translation in the presence of provider and/or other medical staff.
Follow the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) Standards of Practice.
Maintain interpreter certification by obtaining required continuing education.
Consult with providers prior to encounter, assess patients’ communication needs, and explain and clarify cultural behaviors as needed.
Maintain confidentiality per HIPAA and UW Medicine policies.
Competent use of technology (e.g. MS Office Suite, email, internet, pagers, etc.).
Appropriately advocate for patient safety, health, well-being and human dignity.
Demonstrate respectfulness by following Harborview’s mission and vision.
Work independently as well as part of a team.
Promote and protect general safety for patients/families/friends and co-workers through adherence to HMC and UW Medicine procedures.
Participate in and support quality assessment and improvement activities.

High school graduation or equivalent AND three years of interpretation experience with two years interpretation experience in a clinic or hospital setting AND Washington State Department of Social and Health Services certification or qualification
