The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking an Automotive Mechanic to support the Montgomery County Maintenance Organization! This is a full-time position with benefits in the PennDOT Montgomery County Maintenance Organization. Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday
7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (Summer Hours)
8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (Winter Hours)
Lunch break: 30 minutes
May require travel, overtime and shift work. Dual shifts in effect November through March.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Automotive Mechanics maintain, repair, and overhaul cars, trucks, tractors, sweepers, and motorized hand equipment such as chainsaws, jack hammers, tampers and mowers. They also prepare automotive records and reports, and may perform routine field adjustments and emergency road service. The person in this position will also be responsible for work duties that may include, but not limited to, the following:
- Repairs and replaces shock absorbers, transmissions, hour meters, clutches, brakes, and other parts.
- Performs preventative maintenance such as tire changes, wheel alignment and balancing; minor body repairs; and alternator and electrical component tests.
- Repairs diesel equipment in areas such as servicing filters and replacing water pumps, gaskets, and electrical systems. The work excludes diagnosing, parts rebuilding and repairing a diesel engine fuel injection system (injectors and pumps).
- Identifies, determines repair method, and performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance work on equipment which includes cleaning and servicing equipment to standard.
- Performs official state inspections at times including safety tests; road tests; completing inspection records and affixing inspection stickers; and record and maintain accurate State Inspection Records.
- Performs other related work as required.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
Four years of experience in the automotive mechanic trade; or
Completion of an approved apprenticeship; or
Any combination of experience and training.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver's License (Class C minimum).
Requires a valid Pennsylvania Class 1 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment; Class 7 or Class 4 is preferred.
May be required to obtain Refrigerant and Compressed Natural Gas Certifications during the probationary period.
Pennsylvania residency is required.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Pennsylvania State Emissions Certification (OBDII) must be obtained within the probationary period.
The Department of Transportation requires employees in this job to pass its New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
Using agency may require employee to obtain a CFC-12 Refrigerant Recycling Certificate, a 134A Refrigerant Recycling Certificate, or a Compressed Natural Gas Certificate.
