Functions and Responsibilities:
Responsible for Equine care, training, conditioning and health and wellness, as well as maintenance and upkeep of equestrian center and related pastures, paddocks, and arenas.
Assist with all Equestrian activities such as quail hunts, trail rides, lessons and pony rides.
Ensure that all programs, services, and equine care are safely fulfilled in a manner consistent with the standards, goals, and objectives of Cherokee Plantation.
Twice daily feeding and health and wellness check of 30+/- horses.
Treat for bug, environmental and medical issues.
Groom, bathe and exercise all horses, ponies, and mules as directed.
Prepare feed and administer medications.
Blanket and dress with fly sheets, masks, and boots as needed.
Maintain records of health care, medications, rides, etc.
Assist with exercising, conditioning, and training horses and mules for trail rides, quail hunts (including gun, dog, and wagon training) and basic lessons.
Prepare horses and mules for quail hunts, trail rides, lessons, and other equestrian activities.
Guide trail rides, assist with quail hunts, instruct lessons, and participate in other related activities.
Ensure all safety policies are strictly adhered to and be proactive in identifying and mitigating safety concerns and hazards for all people and horses.
Practice, model, and engage in safe horse handling practices at all times.
Clean stalls, pick paddocks, and drag pastures to maintain a clean, sanitary, and healthy environment for all horses, mules, and other animals. Clean water troughs and feed tubs.
Mow pastures, use weed eaters, maintain fencing and areas around stables. Report holes, drainage issues and safety/fencing issues immediately.
Drag and water arenas, maintain jumps.
Hold horses for vet and farrier.
Clean and maintain equipment and wagons.
Assist with other duties and projects as directed by Equestrian Manager.
Work effectively while multi-tasking with interruptions and changes to deadlines.,
Physical Requirements:
Capable of working extended hours including weekends and holidays as necessary, sometimes at the last moment and beyond posted schedule.
Ability to lift and carry or move items that weigh 75 pounds on a regular basis.
Ability to work outdoors during all weather conditions.
The ability to sit, stand, squat, stoop, push, and kneel for extended periods of time.
Be physically able to operate various business machines and equipment.
Performance Skills:
- Must be competent rider and skilled/knowledgeable horse person in all aspects of horse care. Ability to ride a variety of horses at different levels of training for multiple hours each day.
- Motivated self-starter capable of efficiently completing duties and shores with little or no supervision. Ability to assess work environment, prioritize tasks and complete to the required standards.
- Possess a team mentality, ability and desire to help others, not just in the equestrian department but in the organization as a whole.
- Maintain neat, clean and professional appearance and conduct.
- Ability to arrive on time, be reliable, responsible, and trustworthy.
Essential Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent. Further education related to equestrian field is a plus.
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience with horse care, handling/riding horses and mules. Experience driving horses and mules and quail hunting are a plus.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Valid SC driver's license and clear record.
- Ability to drive a truck while towing a trailer is a plus.
