Vice President, Legal Affairs

The Vice President, Legal Affairs and Deputy General Counsel (“DGC ”) is responsible for assisting the Senior Vice President, Legal Affairs and General Counsel (“GC”), in effectively and efficiently providing, managing and coordinating the legal activities and affairs for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Cedars -Sinai Health System, Cedars-Sinai Medical Care Foundation, and other identified affiliates (collectively, “Cedars-Sinai”) with the ultimate objective of optimal legal and strategic advantage for Cedars-Sinai. The DGC guides management and leadership in the interpretation of relevant law, advises on strategic, operational and policy matters, guides enterprise risk management, manages lawsuits, arbitrations and similar proceedings, and maintains an understanding of trends and forces shaping the health care industry in the context of legal requirements.

DGC assists the GC with the day-to-day management and operations within the Department of Legal Affairs (“DLA”), including supervising and directing/ coordinating the work assignments of (a) Associate General Counsel, Senior Corporate Counsel, Corporate Counsel, other more junior attorneys, paralegals and support staff, in the DLA, and (b) outside counsel.

DGC is a legal executive with significant expertise and is responsible for matters of substantial importance. The DGC operates with a significant degree of independence, and routinely retains and interacts with outside legal counsel, experts, and consultants as needed. The DGC strives to carry out the position responsibilities in a timely manner in response to client needs and expectations.

The DGC serves as the DLA representative for Cedars-Sinai initiatives, committees, and task forces as requested by the GC.

DGC maintains subject matter expertise in two or more substantive areas of law that routinely or materially affect Cedars-Sinai operations or strategy, and mentors junior lawyers in the areas.

DGC performs all duties in a manner that promotes Cedars-Sinai mission, values, and philosophy and serves as a role model for the values and mission of the organization.

Educational Requirements:
Minimum: Bachelors Degree and Juris Doctorate

License/Certification/Registration Requirements:
Minimum: Admission to the California Bar (CA State Bar )
Preferred: Post Juris Doctorate legal degree, master’s degree in business or health care related field of study, Professional Certification in Health care compliance or (e.g., LLM, MBA, MPH, Certified in Health Care Compliance)

20 years: The position requires at least twenty (20) years of relevant experience practicing law, working as an in-house or government lawyer, or any combination of the foregoing. Relevant experience includes all of the following:

  • Health care Law (e.g., regulatory, compliance, provider operations, physician contracting, medical practice foundations, payor relations, medical staff, licensure & certification, clinical trials, medical research and development/technology transfer)
  • Representing health care provider organizations in complex transactions
  • Advising executive teams and governing bodies on legal matters
  • Legal operations management and administration
10 years: The position further requires at least ten (10) years of experience working as an attorney with a degree of independence successfully and with supervisory responsibility for other lawyers and/or paralegals (e.g., a partner in a law firm with management or administrative responsibilities, an in-house counsel with supervisory responsibility for other lawyers), and experience in growing and developing less experienced /more junior attorneys to reach their highest potential.

10 years: Strong preference for experience in providing health care and corporate legal advice to a major health system operating in multiple locations with both hospital and physician services
