Postdoctoral Appointee - Modeling and Simulation of Climate Processes in the Arctic

Sandia National Laboratories - Albuquerque, NM4.3

Full-time | Temporary
What Your Job Will Be Like

We are a broad team of geophysicists, Earth scientists, engineers and computer scientists working together to increase our understanding of the Arctic coastal and marine geosystem. We are looking for a post-doc who would like to join our team and conduct novel research that spans multiple disciplines in the physical sciences, engineering, and scientific computing. Our team seeks to increase the understanding of the Arctic region: coastal processes, the submarine environment, and sea-ice. Our techniques involve high-performance numerical modeling and advanced data analysis to understand and make probabilistic forecasts and predictions in the Arctic sea-ice, coastal, and marine geosystem. We use methods such as machine learning, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty quantification to upscale local model predictions, enabling intelligent and informed decision making at the regional and circum-Arctic scales.

On any given day, you may be called on to:
Support collaborative efforts to run multi-physics simulations of Arctic-focused sea-ice, coastal, marine, and environmental processes
Develop or aid in scientific computing through scripting or programming using Matlab, Python, C, C++, and/or Fortran
Perform mathematical analysis (sensitivity analysis and/or uncertainty quantification) of physics-based modeling and simulation results and/or observational data
Enable an understanding of large, complex data in direct support of Arctic centered work, with the goal of upscaling local and regional models
Collaborate on research papers, reports and presentations
This position requires some travel (2-3 times per year).

Qualifications We Require

You have, or are pursuing a PhD in mathematics, physics, earth sciences, computer science, or a related area and possess a bachelor's in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM)
Your background includes experience with numerical methods for solving partial differential equations (PDEs), such as finite element or finite volume methods
Experienced in the application of scientific programming and scripting in Matlab, Python, C, C++, and/or Fortran
Evidence of strong research achievements in relevant technical areas as demonstrated in the form of technical publications, presentations, software tools, and/or knowledge of applications
Qualifications We Desire

Experience in modeling Arctic sea-ice, permafrost, coastal erosion, marine geosystems, or sedimentary systems
Experience with sensitivity studies and uncertainty quantification
Knowledge and interest in statistical analysis techniques and applications, such as machine learning algorithms, correlation, data uncertainty, etc.
Knowledge and interest in data analytic techniques for upscaling to regional and global models
Experience in analyzing sensor data, including multi-source data integration
Research experience in multi-scale/multi-physics simulations
Experience in high-performance computing and coding for new computer architectures
Experience in a collaborative research environment
Excellent communication skills
Able to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance
Position Information

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

About Our Team

The Computational Science Department performs leading-edge software development and technical analysis through physics-based modeling and simulation, using our applications expertise as 'power users' to guide software development at Sandia's Center for Computing Research. Our goal is to establish first-of-a-kind uses of this software in diverse applications of national importance, ranging from nuclear stockpile stewardship to global climate modelling, and spanning multiple disciplines of the physical sciences and engineering. As both developers and analysts, we act as a bridge to set a standard for computational simulation for the broader user community and to incorporate critical feedback from users for continuous improvements in our software development activities and products.

Security Clearance

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
