Responsible for the coordination and oversight of initiatives related to the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit. Responsible for supporting the nurse manager in administrative duties of the unit, especially during off shifts. Provides leadership by collaborating with members of the health care team to maintain standards for professional nursing practice in the clinical setting. Participates in organizational and unit based quality improvement initiatives, and provides input on standards of care. Able to provide patient care when needed, remains competent in clinical skills as demonstrated by weekly patient care shift assignments.
Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing. Must be able to successfully complete BSN degree within 5 years of start date.
Minimum three years nursing experience working in the critical care setting caring for cardiothoracic patients.
CCRN certification within 1 year of start date.
CSC certification within 2 years of start date.
CSU-ALS certification within 2 years of start date.
Demonstrates ability to plan and organize work flow to maximize productivity while maintaining quality, safety and customer satisfaction. Assists in the development of PDCA systems to implement and monitor process improvements and take action where appropriate. Ensures team members maintain departmental policies/procedures, and adhere to all quality, safety, and regulatory standards/requirements. Supports department by monitoring regulatory/accreditation compliance. Takes actions to address deficiencies as appropriate. Trains new and current team members and students. Ensures that orientation and training checklists are completed. Makes sure that annual mandatory education is completed and competencies are assessed and documented. Provides feedback to leadership about team members' performance, including need for coaching, counseling, disciplinary action. Assists leadership in completing initial and annual performance appraisals. Recommends/Assists with the preparation of departmental training and education, quality and safety programs and performance improvement projects for specialty and department in general. Resource person for the specialty in which they are assigned. Very knowledgeable about the specific aspects/technical details of the job, and readily share knowledge with others. Participates in the interview process and provides feedback on candidates. Monitors care provided by maintaining high visibility to patients, families, and team members on the unit. Projects a positive, professional demeanor through verbal and non-verbal communication. Shares accountability with manager and director for unit, department, and organizational goal achievement. Provides managerial support as required. Develops, implements, and participates in Quality Improvement processes. Works with members of the health care team in activities desired to improve patient outcomes. Demonstrates a commitment to customer service with patients, visitors, and other customers as measured through patient satisfaction and departmental surveys. Establishes a warm rapport with patients and families and integrates them into unit activities. Demonstrates a commitment to team member and physician satisfaction as measured by the employee opinion survey. Contributes to the recruitment and retention of employees. Identifies problems and recommends actions relating to staffing, morale, work methods, and procedures. Seeks assistance if unable to solve problems. Motivates by recognizing, rewarding, and reinforcing positive behavior and exemplary performance. Deals effectively with team members experiencing performance and/or behavior problems. Provides leadership in the provision of patient care and unit activities. Ensures patient care is delivered according to evidence-based practice guidelines to the extent of practically possible. Assists team members in the development of problem solving and decision making skills, clearly communicating ideas and suggestions. Ensures high quality care is provided to patients by reviewing and researching concerns or complaints and communicating results to the team. 2.6 Maintains clinical skills by participating in a patient assignment. Participates in all necessary clinical mandatories, blitzes, and additional required training. Supports and participates in shared governance activities. Assists with the development of work schedules and communicates needs with the unit manager. Leads by example and possesses strong critical thinking skills and clinical skills. Guides, advises, and directs nursing staff. Participates in the development and the direct and indirect delivery of professional development programs to meet the needs of the patient and unit. Maintains adequate clinical supplies. Ensures supply purchases are cost effective and within the budget. Ensures clinical equipment remains in operating condition. Completes other duties as assigned.
