Role Summary:The Welder Intern will:
  • be sched. 18hrs/wk
  • weld metal components as spec. by layout, blueprints, diagrams, or manuf. ops sheet (MOS), using electric arc-weld. equip
  • weld flat, horiz, vert, or overhead positions
  • tack assemblies together
  • rotate through checkpoint requirements leading to weld cert., under supv. train.
  • learn competencies (IIA SS & IIIB Inco cert, basic weld symbols/inspection, fixture use, trimming/sizing
  • learn teaming/flexibility/shop safety, etc
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Clean weld joint or work piece
  • Weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions
  • Weld together metal components as specified by layout, blueprints, diagrams, or manufacturing operations sheet (MOS), using electric arc-welding equipment
  • Guide electrode along weld joint, manually or semi-automatically
  • Manually apply filler rod to supply weld metal
  • Positions or clamps work pieces together or assembles them in a jig or fixture
  • Examine weld for bead size and other specifications
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Minimum of 1 year and current enrollment in a Dayton area community career center or community college welding program
  • Ability to work scheduled shift and hours
  • Ability and willingness to lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift up to 40 pounds (with assistance) as required
  • Ability and willingness to work in an area where there is moderate noise intensity (85 to 89.9 dBa)
  • Ability and willingness to work in an area where, due to normal machining operations there may be dust, fumes, or smoke (not over OSHA Permissible Exposure Levels (PEL))

  • Ability to calculate algebraic variables and formulas and have a basic understanding of trigonometry (i.e., sine, cosine, and tangent formulas)

  • Ability to subtract, multiply and divide fractions, decimals and whole numbers
