MITRE is currently seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Operations Research Analyst / Statistician to support work areas contributing to the safe and effective integration of unmanned aircraft into the national airspace and related projects that will benefit the flying public and other aviation system stakeholders. This position offers the opportunity to:

  • Apply innovative analysis techniques and generate creative engineering solutions to solve challenging problems in the field of aviation
  • Contribute to projects assessing risks and system safety associated with integrating Unmanned Aircraft Systems and other new entrants into the national airspace
  • Work on a wide variety of projects and creatively leverage multiple skills across a broad range of scientific, engineering, and software domains to solve problems, both individually and in a team-based environment
Key Functions
The candidate will contribute to MITRE’s FAA, DOD, and International work programs by performing data analysis using a broad spectrum of analytic tools and technologies to meet both internal analysis and external client requirements. Key activities will include:

  • Performing statistical and probabilistic analyses on historical and simulated air traffic and other operational data to draw conclusions about and assess the behaviors of aircraft within a given airspace volume and determine the likelihood/risk of aircraft collisions and related metrics
  • Developing original data analysis tools, processes, and algorithms and implementing these in software such as MATLAB
  • Contextualizing a wide array of aircraft and aviation system data to provide defensible and meaningful interpretations of results in both written and verbal form

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in data analytics, applied mathematics/statistics or physics, systems engineering, operations research, software engineering, computer science or related technical fields and with experience gained through direct work and/or classroom learning
  • Experience conducting analysis on large data sets to identify patterns, trends, emerging behaviors, etc.
  • Applying advanced statistical data analysis methods and implementing data analysis algorithms using programming languages such as R, Python, Java, or MATLAB
  • Conveying the results of data analysis using data visualization tools (e.g., Python/R plotting libraries, Tableau)
Additional required qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to scope, plan, execute, and document complex engineering and/or technical problems
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, apply good judgment, and independently draw conclusions from observed data
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute effectively in a team environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior airport, airspace, or air traffic-related analysis experience
  • Experience with aviation data analysis, including with radar data and FAA/industry data sets
