This position has responsibility for supporting undergraduate and graduate students who have been victims of crime. The coordinator will be housed in the Dean of Student Life Office, and will work as a team with case management, the Counseling Center, the Sexual Violence and Prevention & Education Coordinator, and other appropriate administrators. This position will share in on-call responsibilities as appropriate so needs to be available for evening and weekend work.
Primary Job Duties:
Education and Prevention Responsibilities
Work directly with victims of sexual assault and other crimes to provide crisis intervention and advocacy.
Coordinate interim measures and other accommodations with team of academic partners, Office of Institutional Equity, student affairs colleagues, Campus Safety and Security, and other student services.
Provide appropriate information and referrals to medical services, individual counseling services and support groups, and legal and student conduct services.
Accompany students to university conduct proceedings and other processes that may occur on or off-campus.
Arrange for temporary student housing when an unsafe condition exists or for parents who come to provide support to the student during the time of crisis.
Coordinate safety planning with Campus Safety and Security, appropriate law enforcement and JHU resources.
Assist students with evaluating applicable options.
Provide knowledgeable explanation of student rights, Title IX processes and other JHU policies.
Coordinate with Security in the data collection of sexual violence incidents for the annual Clery Report.
Manage student-led volunteer groups including co-advising the Sexual Assault Resource Unit (SARU) with the Sexual Violence and Prevention & Education Coordinator.
Partner with the Sexual Violence and Prevention & Education Coordinator and coordinate with relevant stakeholders in campus campaigns on issues such as violence prevention and response, risk reduction strategies, bystander intervention etc.
Coordinate and develop programming in partnership with the Behavioral Health Specialist/Sexual Assault for specific populations such as incoming students, Greek Life, Athletes, and Survivors.
Review and utilize programs and policies of best practices in prevention education.
Advise and provide consultation to first responders in their response to victims.
Master’s Degree in Social Work or Counseling and licensed or eligible to obtain a license in the state of Maryland.
Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience working in in advocacy work.
Gender/sexual violence prevention education and advocacy is preferred.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills.
Nationally credentialed crime victim advocate or ability to obtain credentialing within the first year of employment.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge and experience with gender/sexual violence issues in institutions of higher education as well as specialized expertise and knowledge of the effects of sexual assault on victims, survivor recovery, medical and legal procedures.
Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
Capacity to respond well in crisis situations and to persons in distress.
Capable of working in an autonomous environment.
Discretion and sound judgment because OVS deals with highly confidential information.
Ability to foster positive and productive relationships with all campus constituencies including students, staff, administrators, and faculty.
Experience as a trainer and expertise in training models regarding the dynamics, approach, and response to violence prevention and response on college campuses.
Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills, including public speaking and presenting.
Ability to work as part of a team.
Must be available to work some nights/weekends and provide on-call response as necessary in coordination with the Counseling Center on-call staff.
