Description of Job
This Material Handler III (MH III) position provides support to the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) prison facilities by ensuring safe, compliant, efficient and effective operations at a CDOC Warehouse. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to: delivery of inventory and supplies via box truck, shipping and receiving of warehouse products; maintaining inventory and storage; working daily with offender workers to provide instruction in warehouse operations. Position adheres to CDOC Administrative Regulations and warehouse policy in order to provide safe and secure operations and minimize the introduction of contraband to facilities.

Warehouse Inventory Shipping & Receiving:
Issues inventory by pulling orders and or verifying accuracy of orders pulled by others;
Routes non-inventory items after inspecting for contraband and/or other hazardous material, selecting most economical and appropriate shipping method and ensuring proper documentation is utilized;
Receives inventory by verifying delivery location, unloading product utilizing appropriate equipment, i.e. forklift, manual or electric pallet jack;
Inspects shipments and products for quality, grade, freshness, packaging and any other specifications;
Processes all paperwork, confirms accuracy, and notifies appropriate personnel of any discrepancies.

Inventory & Storage:
Maintains warehouse inventory control through daily utilization of inventory system; processes documentation through input of purchases, receipts, issues and adjustments promptly and accurately;
Confirms perpetual inventory by conducting counts of "on hand" product and comparing to computer inventory;
Maintains adequate product levels by analyzing inventory levels and usage reports for reorder points;
Maintains efficient inventory storage by utilizing proper storage areas, monitoring refrigerator, freezer, cool rooms and dry storage temperatures, following product rotation procedures and inspecting for pilferage, deterioration, contamination and infestation;

Safety & Security:
Maintains a safe and secure work environment by following key, tool and chemical control procedures, as well as all fire and safety procedures;
Ensures proper storage of hazardous chemicals by following Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) guidelines and filing procedures;
Promotes personal safety by utilizing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times;
Maintains cleanliness and condition of warehouse by following prescribed cleaning schedule of warehouse and exterior grounds, assists with equipment maintenance;
Inspects parcel packages for known or suspected contraband by utilizing scanning system (fluoroscope) or by manually inspecting unscannable items.
The MH III position trains offender workers in accepted warehouse practices and procedures by demonstrating proper handling and storage of supplies and equipment; position is the work leader of an offender crew, performing "hands on" work along side the offender workers, setting the standard, assigning tasks and monitoring offender work product.

Position requires a high measure of attention to detail and determination to make efficient use of state resources.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:
Experience: Three years of employment experience performing "store keeping" duties (store keeping duties defined below).

Store keeping duties are defined as: receiving products for storage or delivery to cost centers, issuing products for distribution, inventory maintenance and storage. Experience must have required the use of an inventory system and "hands on" work to include order picking, checking, inventory counts, unloading shipments and ordering stock.

Substitution: College or university course work in materials management may substitute on a year for year basis. A copy of your unofficial transcripts with your name, institution name, degree and date conferred must be attached to your application to verify your education.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with an automated inventory system.
Experience driving box truck, loading and unloading truck using pallet jack, electric pallet jack and forklift

Required Competencies:
Computer skills and the ability to manipulate computerized inventory module and communicate via computer based email;
Excellent math skills;
Ability to effectively work with offender workers through training and instructing in a variety of settings;
Proficiency in the use of inventory systems;
Ability to utilize physical strength to move and carry products/items and operate equipment;
Ability to lift 50 pounds;
Ability to utilize hands and arms to handle, install, position and move materials and manipulate things;
Ability to operate an electric forklift, electric pallet jack, manual pallet jack, dollies and carts;
Ability to analyze and categorize information, evaluate results, choose best solution and prioritize tasks quickly and efficiently;
Ability to tactfully and diplomatically handle complaints, settle disputes and resolve conflicts;
Ability to motivate co-workers and offenders to work together to accomplish tasks.
Ability to climb ladders and stairs and work in high, tight and confined spaces;
Willingness and ability to pay special attention to detail and perform comprehensive and accurate work.
Ability to read and comprehend the English language;
Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing;

Successfully pass all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics;

Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics;

Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;

Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;

Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;

Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;

Swing a baton in a striking technique;

Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;

Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;

Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and may be exposed while on assignment;

Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security

Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;

Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;

Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;

Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner;
