The Housing Specialist coordinates and supervises the overall functioning of Transitional Housing property management duties associated with units serving transition age youth.
What a Housing Specialist Does...
Coordinate facilities and furnishings maintenance including assembling furniture.
Effectively and promptly communicate building and maintenance related issues to supervisor and Department Head.
Assist in the maintenance of clean, attractive, safe and well-repaired facilities.
Understand the approved use of various chemicals and cleaning agents and be able to use and follow all MSDS materials/precautions and directions associated with them.
Conducts unit inspections as required by the program policies and guidelines.
Assist in all necessary repairs and upkeep of program properties, including painting, fire safety, changing door knobs, key copies etc.
Monitor YMCA vehicle maintenance schedule and other vehicle documentation, performs vehicle inspections, reports issues to supervisor and Department Head, and coordinate vehicle repairs with approved vendors.
Oversee safety program and inform management of any unsafe conditions.
Follow all fire, health, licensing, and YMCA related standards and property lease requirements.
Must be accessible to facility at all times and carry facility cell phone on and off duty.
Assist and coordinate intakes and departures.
Oversee delivery of consistent services; work with clients, public/private organizations and program staff.
Assess need for and assist in the coordination of all facility renovations and upgrades.
Perform preventative maintenance on equipment throughout the facility.
Repair and/or replace equipment as needed.
Teach Independent Living Skills and provide support to participants in relational wellness.
Provide crises intervention and mediation to participants.
Communicate effectively with Department Head, co-workers, participants, families, and other service providers.
Provide a secondary on-call option during specified times.
Ensure participants maintain safe and adequate living environment.
Work independently and as a team member to create innovative ways to meet contract goals and provide a high level of service that is engaging and meets the needs of the participants.
Transport participants in YMCA vehicle as needed.
Practice non-aggressive defensive driving techniques.
Operate YMCA vehicles in safe manner.
Vehicle use is for YMCA business only.
Perform other administrative tasks as assigned and assist with maintaining proper document storage and auditing.
Participate in and attend all required staff meetings, trainings, YMCA staff development events and appropriate agency-wide committees.

What We Look for in a Housing Specialist...
Must be 21 years of age or older.
Bachelor's degree in social science, psychology or a related field is preferred.
Experience working with young adults (ages 16-24) preferred.
Familiar with the operations of a Transitional Housing-Rapid Re-Housing program preferred.
Ability to work in a very diverse setting with people of all backgrounds, culture and orientation.
Experience with Independent Living Skills preferred.
Ability to interact positively with community partners, including property management and landlords.
Basic computer knowledge and skills.
Must be detailed oriented with excellent organizational skills.
Excellent problem solving and mechanical skills.
Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
Demonstrate initiative, resourcefulness and problem solving skills.
Ability to work with confidential information.
Must be self-aware, flexible, adaptable and teachable.
Ability to work within various deadlines and respond to multiple demands.
Must have reliable transportation to travel throughout San Diego County.
Valid CA Driver's License.
Good driving record.
Current CDL H6 print-out (must be dated within 30 days of application.)
Pass pre-employment drug testing.
Pass vehicle proficiency exam.
Criminal record clearance by being fingerprinted prior to reporting to work and signing a statement regarding criminal convictions.
A physical exam and negative TB test results.
Must be an adult role model with the ability to effectively set limits and function in crisis-oriented and high stress situations.
Visual and auditory ability to observe critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.
Ability to adequately observe participants’ activities, enforce safety regulations and apply appropriate policies and procedures.
Must possess the ability to lead and interact in group activities and perform related physical skills.
Physical ability to lift 50-60 lbs. safely.
The position requires sitting, standing, walking, the use of ladders and kneeling for extended periods of time.
A general knowledge of the use of hand and power tools and ability to build furniture.
Current CPR and First Aid certification required and must be from one of the following certifying organization: American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Safety & Health Institute.
