Cardiac PCU is a 30-bed fast-paced, cardiac and stroke unit. Our unit often accepts between 12 and 20 admissions in a 24-hr period. The most frequent diagnosis seen on our unit include chest pain, NSTEMI, STEMI, A-Fib w/ RVR, Stroke, CHF Exacerbations, COPD, Pneumonia, and Sepsis. During the COVID surge, our unit has taken drips we normally do not see, such as low-dose Levophed, Precedex, and Clevidipine. Our nurses have the ability to deflate TR Bands and titrate cardiac drips including Cardizem, Amiodarone, Heparin, and Nitro.
Types and Ages of Patients Served

The Chief of Medicine must approve the admission of patients under the age of 18. No patient under the age of 13 may be admitted to 8 West.

Pregnant patients may be admitted with Labor and Delivery performing daily fetal monitoring for gestation >20 weeks and OB consult.
In efforts to create a culture of Accountability, Communication and Teamwork (ACT), PCU has established a unit slogan, “PCU Olympians”. Various efforts are made to engage the staff. For example, awarding the “Gold Medalist” each month to an outstanding employee. The network of communication has been broadened by introducing new methods or relaying information to staff (New communication TV in breakroom, communication tree).

Qualifications
-
Associate Degree in Nursig is required; BSN preferred
-
American Heart Association (AHA) BLS required upon hire.

Must meet all unit specific certification requirements: (PALS, ACLS, NRP).

Current Maryland RN licensure is required prior to beginning orientation.

At least 1 year of RN experience is required.
-
Professional Certification is highly encouraged.

If there is gap in applied nursing experience of 5 years or more successful completion of a refresher course within past 6 months is required.

Ability to learn and use computer systems in order to manage patient information
-
Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
