Railroad & Transit Team

Burns provides design and construction solutions to help maintain, improve, and expand the nation's railroad and transit infrastructure. We have designed the implementation of critical programs across the country, and support the renewed emphasis on a public transit-oriented lifestyle.

Burns is currently seeking a Signals Designer to join our Philadelphia, PA team.

Primary Responsibilities

The Signals Designer provides designs, project layouts and prepares contract documents in accordance with company design standards and client requirements under direct supervision of the Project Manager and Senior Engineers.

Specific responsibilities includes, but are not limited to, the following:

Perform design calculations, prepare material and equipment specifications and provide preliminary sketches and notes for drawings.
Perform system design layout and sizing for assigned projects.
Responsible to coordinate the design with other disciplines, attend design coordination meetings with team members and client representatives.
Prepare electronically generated drawings with accuracy, neatness and speed, maintaining high quality and uniform standards of lines and lettering.
Inform the senior designer and engineer of technical challenges and any design work beyond his or her capabilities.
Learn to review shop drawings, record changes and keep all disciples informed of details and schedules.
Coordinate the contract documents with the construction personnel and participates (under supervision) in site inspections during construction as required.
Assist in field data collection and/or field system verifications.
Assist in the supervision of drafters assigned to a project.
Assist in the review and adjustment to project specifications to fit project requirements.
Assist in the studies and selection of equipment to fit the project design.
Actively participate in professional organizations where the technical reputation and image of the firm may be enhanced.
Perform non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity. Work may involve areas lacking precedent.
Minimum Requirements

Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school plus two years practical design experience or has 5 years applicable design experience in the design of similar projects.
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of AutoCAD and/or MicroStation Design software and MS suite of products.
