A reporter is needed to cover news for two award-winning weekly newspapers in Iowa County, Iowa, the Pioneer Republican and Journal Tribune.
This reporter will cover county government, plus the cities of Marengo, Williamsburg and other small towns. He or she also will cover the historic Amana Colonies, and schools of Iowa Valley, HLV, Williamsburg, Clear Creek Amana and English Valleys.
This reporter is expected to find and develop exclusive stories, take photos and video and post content that will appear across mobile, desktop and social media platforms as well as print. He or she will use metrics to understand what’s resonating with readers and will shape coverage to increase audience.
Source development is critical to this position. The reporter will cultivate relationships with city and county officials, business leaders and community stakeholders to break stories.
Iowa County is near the corridor area of Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. It’s a good place to learn journalism basics while using the latest in digital technology. The newspapers also partner with newspapers in Benton and Poweshiek Counties.
The reporter will be equipped to work from home or to file from the road. An ideal candidate would enjoy working independently and embrace rural and small-town life. This job could be a good first job for a new college graduate or a place for a veteran journalist who enjoys rural life to put down roots long-term.
The Pioneer Republican and Journal Tribune are part of Des Moines Register Media.
