Job Description:Position Summary:
ETS’s Research & Development (R&D) division invites applications for the position of Research Director, Inequities and Fairness Research Institute (the “Institute”). The Institute is a new center that ETS plans to open in the Psychometrics, Statistics, and Data Sciences (PSDS) area of R&D. The creation of the Institute is part of PSDS’s Measurement Frontiers initiative, which will expand PSDS’s research efforts to tackle the educational measurement and policy challenges of digital-age assessment. ETS is looking for a senior researcher to lead its policy research efforts; the director should advance work on fairness in education and assessment and make an important impact on inequities in educational outcomes in the U.S. and worldwide.
The Institute’s goal is to enhance the connections between excellence in assessment and improved learning for all. Among other aims, the institute’s research will
Inform policies on using assessment to improve learning and to help reduce inequities;
Include innovative approaches to studying how assessment promotesor inhibits fairness in education;
Rely upon data from small-scale studies with multiple and mixed methodologies, as well as data from large-scale assessments, such as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), the Middle Grades Longitudinal Study of 2016-17, and others. Required Experience:Education, Certifications, or Special Licenses:
A Ph.D. is required in one of the following fields, or in a closely related field: economics, educational measurement, educational psychology, psychometrics, public policy, or statistics.
Relevant Years of Experience Required:
Six years of progressively responsible experience conducting and leading research on educational policy, achievement gaps, inequalities in education and learning or related areas. Evidence of research or administrative leadership is highly desirable.
Proven skills in leading research teams.
Broad understanding of current education policy trends and proven ability to successfully interact with colleagues in the field on substantive issues.
Track record of strategic thinking and problem solving.
Demonstrated ability to scaffold and support the professional and scientific growth of more junior scholars.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to communicate research findings and trends to policymakers, scholars, and the media.
Experience in successfully managing research budgets and relevant financial metrics.
Strong management skills, including the ability to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and lead and motivate professional staff.
