Job Summary
The ideal candidate for Statesboro"s City Clerk will be a dedicated professional that is ready to
embrace the challenges and opportunities of this position in a diverse and growing community. The City
Clerk is responsible for managing and supervising the operations of the department and serving as
custodian of all legal documents for the City. This position is also responsible for overseeing the
collection of city tax and license revenue, implementing and enforcing city ordinances, and acting as
election superintendent and pension committee secretary.

The City Clerk is appointed by Mayor and Council and subject to an employment contract. The
ideal candidate must be a proven leader with the ability to function as an integral part of the executive
team while serving at the pleasure of Mayor and Council. A strong work ethic is a must for this position. Essential Job Functions

~ Signs, certifies and preserves city ordinances, resolutions, contracts, reports and other documents;
~ Serves as official secretary for the City Council: attends all meetings, prepares meeting agendas, issues meeting notices, records and preserves official meeting minutes and other official documents, receives legal service of papers, ensures that ordinances are codified, implements parliamentary procedures, and prepares correspondence for Council members;
~ Conducts city elections, including maintaining files on candidates and results, preparing related reports, hiring and training election officials, ordering supplies, registering voters, and counting ballots;
~ Accepts, receives, and/or collects payments for City licenses, permits, and occupational taxes;
~ Supervises the collection of business license fees, alcoholic beverage licenses and fees, ad valorem taxes, and property taxes;
~ Prepares information and reports as requested by the City Council;
~ Ensures that elected officials attend mandatory training programs;
~ Plans and implements orientation schedule for newly-elected officials;
~ Represents the City at various functions;
~ Supervises, directs, counsels, and evaluates the performance of department personnel;
~ Interviews, hires, trains, counsels and evaluates department employees;
~ Recommends disciplinary actions, promotions and salary increases;
~ Develops and implements department operating procedures;
~ Develops and implements the department budget;
~ Attends training classes and seminars as required;
~ Prepares travel expense reports for Mayor and Council members; and
~ Performs other assigned duties. Minimum Qualifications
~ Bachelor"s degree in public administration, political science, or a closely related field;
~ Five (5) years of experience in a related field;
~ Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; and
~ Valid State of Georgia Driver"s License. Additional Information
The starting salary for this position will be established commensurate with the experience and
qualifications of the selected candidate; starting salary is expected to be in the range of $65,000-
$72,000. A comprehensive benefits package includes: health, dental and life insurance, retirement
