Park Information:
The tallest living sand dune on the Atlantic coast is a premier location for kites, sightseeing and sunsets, with a view arcing from the ocean to Roanoke Sound. A visitor center with museum and 360-foot boardwalk with exhibits explain the dune's ecology and are a gradual entry to the massive dune field. Hang gliding lessons are available through a vendor in the park. Experienced hang gliders must have a current USHPA membership and get a flying permit at the visitor center. Shoes and sun protection are recommended. By calling ahead 24-hours in advance, it's possible for mobility-impaired visitors to schedule a ride in our all-terrain-vehicle to the top of the dunes. The soundside access of the park is a different experience offering sunbathing, wading, paddling and a one-mile nature trail that opens onto wetlands, grassy dunes and maritime thickets.

Description of Work:
This park ranger position provides educational programming, natural resource management, law enforcement/emergency services, seasonal employee supervision, administration, operations, and maintenance to Jockey's Ridge State Park. This ranger will act as lead interpretive and educational ranger, and provide activities for the public regarding the ecology and history of park and may serve as lead role in other phases of park operations. The ranger is responsible for maintaining park facilities, monitoring natural resources, and serving as the park contact for public information requests. This position will research the assigned natural and cultural resources and may develop and implement resource management plans. This ranger is a commissioned law enforcement officer and will enforce state laws and park regulations through patrol, education, warnings, citations, and arrests. This ranger performs and directs emergency medical response and emergency rescue in the park and will offer assistance to other parks. This ranger will have responsibilities for routine maintenance and minor repairs, with a heavy emphasis on trail maintenance. Operational duties include issuing facility permits, opening and closing facilities, and purchasing equipment and supplies. This ranger will assist other park rangers and maintenance staff with their assignments when more manpower is needed or staff is absent. This ranger position is responsible for the hiring and supervision of between one and three seasonal employee position.

Housing is available with this position, and it is a requirement that the person who takes this position lives in the housing provided.

May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Technical Knowledge:
1. Experience preparing and conducting educational programs;

2. Experience addressing varying size groups of people in a public speaking capacity;

3. The ability to monitor, manage and protect natural and cultural resources;

4. The ability to manage day to day activities in park operations.

Protection & Safety:
1. Working knowledge and skill in the operations, maintenance, facility upkeep and/or administration of parks or other outdoor recreation areas;

2. Working knowledge of maintenance and repair processes and methods;

3. The ability to utilize a methodical and logical approach to investigate and enforce criminal laws, state park rules and regulations;

4. Ability to utilize the operation and basic care of small engines (i.e., lawn mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws and/or backpack blowers);

5. The ability to utilize technical and professional information to facilitate protection and safety of persons, state and personal property;

6. Must demonstrate a willingness to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

Program Management:
1. Working knowledge of computers, related peripherals and software;

2. Ability to accurately enter data into online forms and databases;

3. The ability to supervise seasonal employees and other temporary or volunteer workers;

4. Ability to plan and organize daily activities to meet program objectives;

5. Ability to follow policy and procedures in response to various situations and problems;

Communication:
1. Oral and written skills necessary to perform duties and ability to articulate observations while on patrol and during investigations;

2. Ability to present information to individuals or groups;

3. Ability to deliver presentations suited to the characteristics and needs of the Park.

Applicant must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and meet DOA Fleet Safety Policy guidelines.

Must successfully pass Basic Law Enforcement Training within the 1st year of employment.

Prior to employment, candidates are required to have successful results in physical and psychological examinations to include drug testing and a background investigation as required by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education, Training and Standards Commission.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree preferably in Parks and Recreation and/or Natural Science from an appropriately accredited institution; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
