Our client is a mezzanine and equity co-invest fund that invests in middle market, private, entrepreneurial companies

with revenues ranging from $20 to $150 million. It invests in niche manufacturing, distribution and service companies

across a wide range of industries, always in partnership with private equity sponsors or management teams. The firm

focuses on buyouts and recapitalizations of family or privately-owned businesses, orphaned corporate divisions, or

businesses with inactive owners. It has an established and successful track record covering many years of managing

institutional capital in this debt finance niche.

Position & Career Opportunity

The firm is adding a mid-level dedicated business development professional to the team of deal execution, portfolio

management and partnership professionals. Management believes this is a very exciting and unique opportunity to

build a long-term career with a highly successful, growing mezzanine firm. It intends to hire a professional capable of

progressing to levels of higher responsibility in the organization as part of a normal career progression in

subsequently-raised follow-on funds.

The new position will be based in Chicago and will participate at all levels of marketing and business development

activities, including, but not limited to, the following:
  • Generate new mezzanine and equity co-investment investment opportunities for the firm.
  • Perform initial screening of new deal opportunities with investment personnel.
  • Schedule and participate in marketing visits with private equity firms, family offices, commercial banks,
commercial finance companies, business brokers, investment bankers, accountants, attorneys, and other

referral professionals, and include the firm personnel when appropriate.

  • Travel to assigned territories to meet with referral sources. Expected travel is approximately 50% of the time.
A typical week might include 2-3 days of out-of-town travel to call on private equity sponsors and referral

sources, as well as attend targeted conferences and industry trade shows. Perform requisite follow-up of items

and possible opportunities generated during city marketing visits and conferences.

  • Prepare the firm’s corporate profile submissions for industry conferences.
  • Arrange meetings during industry conferences.
  • Perform company research and contact prospective attendees/prospective acquisition candidates in advance of
tradeshows and conferences.

  • Perform quarterly or semi-annual marketing calls on referral sources as appropriate.
  • Compile monthly marketing call results and review monthly/quarterly with senior partners.

Qualifications of Candidates

  • Minimum five years of experience in a marketing/business development or new deal execution role in the
financial services sector such as investment banking, equity or mezzanine investing, corporate lending, or

corporate development & finance related positions.

  • Sufficient general knowledge of structured finance, M&A transactions, accounting, and capital markets.
  • Bank, private credit or investment banking credit trained.
  • Knowledge of finance or accounting required.
  • Strong verbal, listening and written communication skills to convey the firm investment strategy and
criteria to the referral community in presentations and other settings.

  • Ability to make cold calls to referral sources and prospective investment companies.
  • Ability to communicate in easy-to-understand, direct language; comfort with public speaking at
conferences and interaction with private equity professionals.

  • Proficient internet research skills, particularly related to identifying prospective investment referral sources.
  • Ambitious, resourceful, self-directed individual, who anticipates the needs of other team members,
demonstrates good judgment in decision-making and can self-prioritize.

  • Comfort with small office, execution-oriented & fast-paced environment.
  • Professional with high integrity, credibility, and character who has demonstrated high moral and ethical
behavior in previous positions.
