The Director Lab Services is responsible for directing the administrative and management activities and technical activities of all laboratories in the Cleveland Clinic Akron General health system to ensure the accurate and timely completion of tests and reporting of test results to aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment patients.
Directs the activities of the various laboratory departments to include the managers, supervisors, coordinators, clerks, secretaries, technologists, technicians, assistant pathology, histologists, cytologists and clerks. The director oversees the interviewing, hiring, training and disciplinary action, when needed, of all laboratory employees.
Plans and directs daily operations of the various departments within the Lab to ensure a safe environment for all medical staff, employees and visitors.
Ensures all department personnel maintain a customer-centric professional focus. Analyzes workload and productivity indices to ensure appropriate availability of services and test turnaround time.
Assumes financial responsibility for the various laboratory departments. Prepares the operating and capital budgets. Manages the supply and labor costs within established guidelines.
Ensures maximum reimbursement for services rendered. Keeps current with changes in Medicare/Medicaid and various third party payor guidelines and requirements. Responds to complaints and reports potential compliance problems related to Medicare, Medicaid
Oversees the coordination of medical center blood drives to ensure collection of sufficient units to achieve best pricing.
Oversees continuing education and training of laboratory staff.
Participates in establishing and implementing performance improvement and quality assurance standards. Monitors laboratory quality assurance program to ensure standards of accuracy, precision and consistency are met and corrective measures are taken when
Establishes, monitors and attains challenging and achievable goals and objectives of the various departments within Laboratory Services. Researches and evaluates potential new programs and prepares cost justification for requests to administration.
Ensures adherence to departmental and hospital wide policies and procedures. Complies with all applicable licensing, regulatory and accrediting agencies.
Establishes positive and collegial working relationships. Maintains effective communication with all levels of the organization to include governing boards, medical staff and other department heads.
Remains abreast of technological, management and legislative developments by reviewing current literature and attending various meetings, seminars and workshops.
Attends management and administrative meetings and serves on committees as requested.
Maintains departmental records and prepares activity reports to inform management of departmental and programmatic initiatives.
Maintains continuous personal and professional growth, education and development. Remains current on all subject matters relative to managing laboratory services (e.g. technological, government/legislative regulations, management and fiscal matters).
Evaluates and accesses the performance of all supervisors, managers and other direct reports to determine satisfactory compliance with all job duties and responsibilities.

Follows Hospital and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, dress code and display of ID badge, and safety.
Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department-specific competencies and requirements.
Bachelor's degree in business or sciences required.
Master's degree in business administration preferred.
Requires state registry/certification as Medical Technologist/ Clinical Laboratory Scientist level (MLS or MT) from state and ASCP.
Complexity of Work:

Analytical ability and knowledge of statistical measures.
Strong interpersonal skills and organizational skills. Excellent verbal written and presentation communication skills.
Proficient in the use of personal computers and hospital information systems.
Three years progressively more responsible hospital lab management/supervisory experience required.
