Job Summary

Habitat Store Managers generate revenue and maintain profitability objectives, in support of the mission of Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King County, through the acquisition, management, and marketing of Store products. The Store Manager also implements and drives programs for the donation of home furnishings and home improvement materials, provides sustained network development to expand the scope of Habitat Store activities and develops long-term, collaborative relationships with community based businesses, trade groups, donors and others to secure donations and raise awareness of Habitat for Humanity mission in the community.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Drive donations, sales and profits of the Store to further the affiliate mission.
  • Demonstrate and train staff in outstanding service to customers, donors, volunteers and others.
  • Establish, maintain and expand long-term mutually beneficial relationships with current and prospective donors, civic/business organizations, governmental bodies and other non-profit organizations to increase quality and quantity of merchandise donations.
  • Understand and communicate the key performance metrics to all Associate positions Manage store operations, ensuring positive customer experiences and high quality operations.
  • Ensure Store is adequately staffed and operated by Associates with knowledge, skills, abilities and leadership to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Ensure all personnel understand and can effectively communicate the Habitat Store and affiliate missions to members of the public.
  • Manage Habitat Store assets effectively to ensure safety of employees, volunteers, customers and others, maintaining licenses and other required as needed for government bodies and others.
  • Participate in developing and implementing a marketing plan to further the mission of Habitat Store and local affiliates, working with local organizations and media.
  • Participate in developing, rolling out and measuring marketing and advertising programs to increase donations, sales and volunteer participation.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations in individual and group settings
  • Hire, train and manage Store Associates in accordance with relevant personnel and safety policies, taking steps to ensure staff understand and adhere to all policies and practices.
  • Evaluate, recognize and reward staff performance. Work with designated affiliate functions, when required, to document and take action to address violations of policy including safety, poor job performance or misconduct in a timely and appropriate manner. Resolve situations involving volunteers in consultation with the volunteer coordinator when required.
  • Implement and monitor systems for daily cash transactions and deposits.
  • Provide accurate accounting records of revenues and expenses as required or requested.
  • Approve and submit accurate payable invoices on a timely basis. Approve employee recording of time worked.
  • Develop annual operating budgets and recommend capital expenditures.
  • Provide reports of designated activities including but not limited to: sales, expenses, outreach activities
  • Ensure safety practices at the facility
  • Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position supervises Store Associates and Volunteers.

Qualifications and Skills

Education/Experience

BA or BS strongly preferred. A minimum of 3-5 years experience of responsible leadership, directing and building successful teams and accountability for meeting objectives required.

Previous experience and/or skills must include

  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and experience of all operational activities within a retail store or other high paced business environment Solid application of interpersonal and communications skills, internally and externally, with groups and individuals.
  • Ability and willingness to call on existing and potential donors to increase merchandise in the store.
  • Demonstrated ability in training, managing, leading, coaching and developing associates in a consistent, positive and safety conscious manner.
  • Successful problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt to rapidly changing conditions with unexpected shifts in priorities.
  • Willingness to have a flexible schedule. Able to work weekends and some weeknights.
  • Driver’s license with clean driving record.
  • Experience driving a box truck or the willingness to drive a box truck with training.

Leadership Skills: Ability to demonstrate consistent high standards of integrity, ethics and accountability. Ability to build cooperative, mutually beneficial and long-term relationships. Ability to project a professional image in speech and demeanor in interactions with others in multiple venues and scenarios.

Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common business documents, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquires or complaints from customers, volunteers, agencies, or the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, the public and/or board of directors.

Math Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills: Strong computer skills, including point of sale systems, inventory controls, spreadsheets, word processing, presentations and email. Proficiency with computer usage, especially Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

The Store Manager position requires occasional lifting of 75 pounds or less, walking and standing for prolonged periods of time, traveling within the community, and walking on unimproved job sites or buildings under construction. This position also requires the ability to drive.
