Title: Swim Instructor
Department: Aquatics
Reports to: Aquatics Director or Programs Manager

Summary:
The Swim Instructor conducts swim lessons for acac members and guests in private, semi-private, and group settings following acac’s learn-to-swim program guidelines and swim levels. The Swim Instructor teaches adults and children so that they progress effectively to higher levels of swimming. Candidates must be available to work and Saturday mornings.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned):

Maintains vigilance while conducting swim lessons in order to maintain constant control of the lesson and emphasize safety at all times
Maintains attendance records
Schedules makeup classes per acac's policies
Arrives to work at least 5 minutes before start of swim lessons
Is visible on the pool deck and accessible to answer swim team related questions
Has class materials ready before class and cleans up after
Greets participants as they arrive
Teaches progressive swim lessons and follows acac's learn-to-swim program
Communicates with participants and/or parents regarding progress
Ensures assigned lessons are covered prior to taking leave
Is knowledgeable of acac aquatic polices and can effectively communicate these to members and guests
Is prepared to enforce acac aquatic policies if unsafe situations arise
Ensures ongoing familiarity with acac programs to manage questions and communicate knowledgeably to acac members and guests

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs the Essential Functions and Responsibilities as described (other duties may be assigned)
  • Remains competent in administering acac’s Emergency Action Plan and is alert and prepared for any emergency
  • If unable to work, proactively seeks substitutes for shifts and immediately informs supervisor of the substitution
  • Wears proper uniform at all times while at work and always presents the acac brand and standard anytime and anywhere the acac uniform is worn
  • Attends departmental meetings and any other meetings as requested
  • If not already certified, attends CPR and First Aid training provided by acac and maintains current CPR/FA certification for the duration of employment
  • Attends New Hire Launch within 30 days of employment
  • Checks acac email daily
  • Ensures that time worked does not exceed 40 hours during the pay week (Sunday-Saturday); any overtime worked must be pre-approved by the supervisor
  • Reads, signs, and abides by the policies included in the Team Member Handbook
  • Parks in team member designated areas
  • Club cleanliness is an all-team responsibility; helps whenever necessary in any area of the club to keep club neat and clean
  • Helps with Service Day
  • Helps with acac programs, special events, or activities outside department
  • When supervisor or team members call or email, promptly returns contact
  • Exhibits a positive attitude at all times and upholds acac’s values of teamwork, customer service, and engagement
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Previous teaching or coaching experience preferred
  • Current or expired Red Cross WSI certification preferred
  • Previous teaching and/or coaching experience may be substituted in lieu of certification
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications a plus
  • Superior customer service skills
  • Must have a genuine interest in working with and interacting with children and adults of all skill levels
  • Must be available to work during the hours outlined in the Job Description
  • Able to work varied shifts, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Able to be creative in finding the best teaching methods to accommodate different populations
  • Able to successfully instruct and demonstrate proper swim techniques and use of swim equipment
  • Able to actively participate in swim lessons using repetitive arm and leg motions
  • Able to swim in both deep and shallow water
  • Able to work in an often warm and humid environment with heightened noise
  • Able to work in both warm water and cool water pools
  • Able to swim confidently with other participants in the pool
  • Able to motivate and inspire participants while teaching a safe and effective class
  • Must enjoy working in a team environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Willing and able to respond immediately and appropriately to multiple or unexpected situations or emergencies
  • Safety and customer service oriented
  • Willing to participate in training and attend team meetings
