The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent research center at the University of Washington. Its mission is to monitor global health conditions and health systems, as well as to evaluate interventions, initiatives, and reforms. IHME carries out a range of projects within different research areas including: the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors; Future Health Scenarios; Costs and Cost Effectiveness; Local Burden of Disease; Resource Tracking; and Impact Evaluations. The aim is to provide policymakers, donors, and researchers with the highest-quality quantitative evidence base to make decisions that achieve better health.
IHME has an exciting opportunity for an Engagement Specialist to join our team. The Engagement Specialist will manage communications across a large and growing network of international collaborators, with the ultimate goal of strengthening the evidence base for our research, cultivating buy-in among key audiences, and seeding uptake of findings by decision makers and policy influencers. They will understand population health, principles of collaboration, communication with diverse audiences, and strategies for managing network communications. This position provides direct support and communication to a growing network of 3,824 collaborators from 145 countries and territories (at the time of writing).
Collaborators will include multilaterals, international NGOs, country governments, research institutions, members of the media, the private sector, health administrators, and other health decision-makers and policy influencers that will use IHME’s findings to inform policy discussions, improve program design, and allocate resources. This position will focus mainly on topics related to the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD), Injuries and Risk factors enterprise, and affiliated research projects including the Local Burden of Disease project.
Collaborative Network Management
Develop standard materials and operating procedures to serve as resources to internal staff when interacting with members of the collaborative network.
Manage key communication channels and calendars for the Collaborator Network, including newsletters, online portals, and other mediums. Gather information proactively from key faculty and staff in order to coordinate communications and respond to schedule changes in a fast-paced environment.
Develop and execute a communications strategy with a range of activities intended to deepen engagement and respond to the needs of Collaborators and of the research and publication processes.
Empower IHME’s networks to better understand, communicate, and utilize evidence from IHME’s areas of work through developing informational materials, contributing to training activities, and facilitating dialogues on key topics.
Oversee customer service processes and systems to ensure collaborators are satisfied.
Assist in the development and implementation of the Network membership plan, including facilitating opportunities for Collaborators to participate in all stages of the research.
Triage, resolve, and respond to requests from collaborators and external stakeholders. Identify relevant results and materials to provide resources to collaborators who make requests. Must be able to translate broad or general requests into specific materials and responses.
Write, edit, and improve materials available to external stakeholders and individuals in the Collaborator Network.
Speak to diverse technical and nontechnical audiences in a language and manner that connects with their interests while explaining in clear terms IHME’s work and mission.
Craft articulate, professional, and concise correspondence and written materials for stakeholders. Utilize excellent judgment and tact in responding to a wide range of inquiries.
Develop project timelines in conjunction with stakeholders and IHME deadlines, managing the creation and delivery process for a variety of different communications.
Cultivate a strong understanding of the key concepts, methods, and results of IHME’s work, particularly the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study. Become articulate about key methodologies, results, findings, and future implications.
Work with IHME researchers to understand findings, developments, and future directions of research
Develop familiarity with key stakeholders and stakeholder networks, including their political, intellectual, and financial context and interrelationships as it relates to health.
Summarize complex scientific results, concepts, and implications proficiently into materials and explanations to external stakeholders.

Bachelor’s degree plus 2+ years related experience or combination of education and experience.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Demonstrated communications management experience required.
Must exhibit strong desire and ability to learn new intellectual and scientific content across different disciplines in a timely fashion.
Demonstrated skill at translating information and utilizing language that resonates with different audiences.
Ability to adapt rapidly to different social and intellectual contexts. Must be able to sense organizational norms in a variety of different settings – including local governments, donor organizations, and international organizations – and carry out communications and relationship management in accord with them.
Excellent interpersonal skills; a cooperative team player, able to develop productive relationships with colleagues and external collaborators.
Track record for being detail-oriented with a demonstrated ability to self-motivate and follow through on projects
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must be flexible and creative in responding to changing circumstances and new information.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

This position works directly with a global network of collaborator and may need to work outside of business hours in order to complete job duties.
