We continue to revolutionize how people create, deliver, and enjoy entertainment worldwide. To do that, we need the absolute best talent. We’re big enough to give you all the resources you need, and small enough so you can make a real difference and earn recognition for your work. We offer a collegial culture, challenging projects, and excellent compensation and benefits.
Applied Vision Scientist, Applied Vision Science Group (Sunnyvale)
Dolby’s Applied Vision Science Group investigates perceptual aspects of the human visual system and turns what we learn into technologies and products for improving perceived video quality. Understanding the relationship between science, art, and engineering is fundamental to doing this well. Our group is looking for a motivated and energetic engineer-scientist to join our team in Sunnyvale, CA.
We are specifically looking for a talented and inventive individual to develop and improve algorithms for consistently presenting images on a wide range of display technologies and viewing environments. One of our key themes is to quantify, distill and reproduce the creative intent – the look and feeling that a content creator intended for their image, across the increasingly wide range of display devices that are used today.
We work with partners throughout the entire ecosystem from content creation, distribution, playback and display. Work is performed in a small collaborative team environment involving frequent interaction with other internal groups having substantial expertise in the movie industry and consumer electronics.
One of this group’s key contributions is towards Dolby Vision, which is now considered the premier implementation of high dynamic range and wide color gamut video. Our goal is to further widen the gap between our competitors, make it more widespread, and expand into new aspects of video quality.
Invent, design and develop algorithms for modelling, guiding and preserving the appearance of motion and resolution across a wide range of content and display types.
Translate fundamental aspects of vision and color science into useful algorithms for maintaining video quality.
Develop experiments for evaluating perceptual video quality on a variety of displays.
Deliver internal and external technology presentations and feasibility/proof of performance demonstrations.
Represent company technology interests at conferences, industry associations or standards bodies.
Write software that is efficient, modular, bug free, understandable to others and well documented.
Work closely with patent liaisons to provide complete and well written input for the generation of patent applications.
Maintain the highest technical and moral integrity for Dolby in the workplace and marketplace.
Masters or Ph.D. degree in Imaging or Color Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Graphics or a related field.
Minimum of 3 years of related experience in one or more of the following areas:
Spatial-temporal filtering and processing
Color science or color management systems
In-depth knowledge of digital signal processing theory and practice.
Understanding of advanced display technologies and related processing.
Proficient at applying scientific principles, theories, concepts and techniques to a variety of challenging technical problems.
Strong programming skills in Matlab and/or other languages such as C, C++, or Python.
Excellent communication skills; a team-oriented work ethic, and ability to work under minimal supervision.
Has a track record of successful research accomplishments, published papers, and/or patent applications in the field of color science and/or video processing.
It is highly desirable to have one or more of the following:
Experience seeing an image processing algorithm through from concept, prototyping, testing, to deployment in a shipping product.
Experience in measuring, characterizing, and calibrating display devices (both professional and consumer).
Experience in filing patents of newly developed technologies.
