About This Role
Every position at Common Citizen from seed to sale, is contributing to our mission to serve our fellow citizens of Michigan with the highest quality, safest cannabis product through our highly individualized and education-oriented provisioning centers. The Extraction Lab Captain will oversee all production, quality assurance, operations, training, safety awareness and personnel at our cannabis extraction facility. This job includes significant administrative and regulatory compliance duties to ensure our client complies with GMP standards.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:
1. Process Management:
- Overseeing the entire hydrocarbon extraction process, including equipment setup, operation, and maintenance.
- Overseeing the downstream process including post processing, kitchen and MIPS packaging.
- Developing and optimizing extraction methods to maximize yield, throughput, and product quality for all MIPS SKUs.
- Implementing and improving standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Standard Work (SW) for extraction processes, kitchen production, and packaging.
- Manage production of edibles, concentrates, vapes and infused flower products (MIPS products)
- Lead new product development efforts as MIPS product and production subject matter expert, collaborating with finance, commercialization and marketing teams
- Lead improvement efforts using CC’s Lean Management System to achieve business KPIs.
- Create and operationalize new and improved product formulations.
2. Quality Control:
- Ensuring all products meet quality standards and regulatory requirements.
- Conducting regular quality checks and testing on extracted products.
- Implementing corrective actions to address any quality issues.
3. Compliance:
- Ensuring adherence to all state and federal regulations regarding cannabis extraction.
- Maintaining accurate records and documentation for compliance audits.
- Staying updated on changes in cannabis laws and regulations.
4. Safety:
- Enforcing safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Conducting safety training for extraction team members.
- Responding to and managing any safety incidents.
5. Team Management:
- Interview, hire, train and supervise Citizens that will fit our culture.
- Supervising and mentoring extraction technicians and other staff.
- Build a Great Team of high performing Citizens around a culture of engagement and transparency.
- Scheduling and managing workloads for the extraction team and MIPS packaging.
- Conducting performance evaluations and providing feedback.
- Address and escalate personnel issues as needed with support of Directors and CR.
6. Inventory Management:
- Managing inventory of raw materials, solvents, and finished products.
- Coordinating with procurement to ensure a steady supply of necessary materials.
- Tracking and reporting inventory levels and usage.
- Ensure proper inventory in METRC; assure document control requirements are met by the department.
7. Research and Development:
- Leading R&D efforts to develop new products and improve existing ones.
- Collaborating with other departments on product development and innovation.
- Participate and lead Lean improvement efforts (i.e., Time Observation Studies, Safety Committees, etc.).
- Accountable for 5-S and Standard Work development and Process improvement in the department.
- Keeping abreast of industry trends and advancements in extraction technology.
- Staying updated on changes in cannabis laws and regulations.
- Investigating all adverse events, errors and complaints; documenting investigations and determining the root cause.
- Implementing and improving standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Standard Work (SW) for extraction processes, kitchen production, and packaging.
8. Operational Efficiency:
- Identifying and implementing process improvements to increase efficiency.
- Monitoring production metrics and adjusting processes to meet production goals.
- Operate and manage the high-throughput progression of product through winterization, filtration, and distillation of the resulting crude oil using thin film distillate systems, and finally isolation.
- Overseeing the entire hydrocarbon extraction process, including equipment setup, operation, and maintenance.
- Assuring work tasks within their assigned responsibilities are executed per the Standard Work with high degree of Safety, Quality and Regulatory Compliance.
- Developing and optimizing extraction methods to maximize yield, throughput, and product quality for all MIPS SKUs.
- Meet and exceed KPIs: Safety, Quality, Schedule Attainment, Productivity, Cost and Culture.
- Overseeing the downstream process including post processing, kitchen and MIPS packaging.
- Managing budgets and controlling costs within the extraction department.
9. Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
- Ensuring regular maintenance and calibration of extraction equipment.
- Troubleshooting and resolving technical issues that arise during extraction.
- Ensure equipment reliability and utilization in collaboration with maintenance and engineering.
- Coordinating with external vendors for equipment repairs and maintenance.
- Must be accessible 7 days a week either on-site or by phone to address any laboratory issues.
10. Reporting:
- Preparing and presenting reports on production, quality, and efficiency metrics.
- Providing updates to senior management on extraction operations.
- Maintaining detailed logs and records of extraction activities.
The Experience You Bring and the Skills we Need:
· 5 year’s direct applied Experience minimum; Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Engineering or a related field is preferred.
· Previous whole plant extraction experience is required.
· Management of and deep experience in hydrocarbon extraction processes and downstream processes: process development and documentation, equipment setup, operation, process optimization and maintenance.
· Experience with edible cannabis production, specifically fruit chews and gummies
· Superior time management skills including the ability to manage multiple issues concurrently and the ability to lead an effective and efficient meeting.
· Comfortable in a fast-paced, ever changing, highly transparent, deadline-driven environment.
· Knowledge of management and organizational concepts, principles, and techniques with demonstrated professional assertiveness.
· Experience complying with GMP and Food Safety standards.
· Excellent critical thinking and root cause analysis skills: troubleshoot issues in process, materials and instrumentation.
· Strong math and computer skills: ability to analyze and interpret data – MS Excel is a must.
· Knowledge of CO2 extraction experience is preferred but not required.

- Must be able to stand for the duration of the shift.
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Comfortable working in a kitchen and extraction environment (tolerance of heat & humidity).
