About the Department
Physical Plant Management (PPM) in the division of Administration and Finance, plays an important role in maintaining the quality of CSUN's physical environment by keeping the buildings and landscape safe, clean and aesthetically pleasing. PPM employees provide excellent customer service to the campus community in the areas of custodial and grounds, engineering services, asset management, central receiving and campus store, university postal services, and reprographics/quickcopies. PPM performs maintenance work and makes major and minor repairs to campus facilities and remodels, and renovates classrooms and offices at the request of other departments.
Under general supervision, the Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Mechanic performs work involving all aspects of the operation, installation, maintenance and repair of building and auxiliary Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. The incumbent performs routine maintenance and repair on air conditioning equipment and complicated building equipment control systems; investigates and reports on HVAC systems for inadequacies and/or problems; provides technical assistance to Energy Management Systems (EMS) technicians and Facility Workers in the proper operation, maintenance and repair of complicated HVAC systems; troubleshoots and makes modifications to resolve HVAC problems, Variable Air Volume (VAV) terminal units, Constant Air Velocity (CAV) terminal units and other types of technical units and their associated controls; assists in new installations of HVAC equipment; proposes solutions to problems; assures all safety rules and regulations are adhered to; acts as a team member on project work and coordinates with other areas within the department; completes reports and required documentation; assists the Lead Refrigeration Mechanic as assigned; and performs other duties as assigned.
One year of experience in the installation and repair of central multi-zone air conditioning systems. Journey-level skill equivalent to that acquired through the completion of a refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic's apprenticeship program is required. Progressively responsible experience in the installation, adjustment, maintenance and repair of commercial and domestic refrigeration and air conditioning systems involving modulatory and safety controls, thermostats, humidifiers and duct stats. A valid California Driver's License is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the theory and operation of major types of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and of the materials, equipment and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of such equipment. Working knowledge of electrical voltage, plumbing refrigeration, electrical and plumbing codes, thermodynamics and automated energy/environmental management systems. Abilities and specialized skills to: install, operate and repair HVAC equipment and systems; demonstrate a high degree of mechanical skill equivalent to journey-level in one or more related trades such as plumbing, pipe fitting, electrical, or air conditioning; read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawing and specifications; make rough sketches; estimate cost, time and materials in mechanical work; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position; use judgement and discretion in determining methods and priorities of work orders; perform skilled electrical and plumbing work; diagnose and repair major malfunctions in the complex multi-zone air conditioning systems; devise and control air distribution efficiently with maximum comfort; and diagnose and repair the full range of refrigeration equipment including centrifugal and absorber equipment and/or screw, scroll and reciprocating refrigeration equipment; provide excellent customer service and interaction with others; and operate standard office equipment and software including but not limited to: PC computer and Microsoft Office.

The salary range for this classification is: $5477 - $6943 per month.
The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $5477 - $5750, dependent upon qualifications and experience.
HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; 6:00am - 2:30pm, Monday through Friday.
TEMP: This is a Temporary year-to-year renewable position.
