The intern would primarily work on developing Mobile GIS applications for field operations occurring throughout various departments within NYPA. Some of the skills needed to support this would be a thorough understanding of GIS programming and building custom applications using ArcGIS API’s (Application Programming interface) and ArcGIS Server and Online technologies
The intern will work with Cultural Resource Specialists to assist in building a geodatabase of historical resources in NY State to be used as screening tool to support NYPA staff in identifying areas of potential concern that would be affected by NYPA projects.
Additionally, the intern would be tasked with building geodatabases, creating data dictionaries, creating custom map applications, establishing appropriate data security, and proving documentation to support ongoing NYPA GIS requests.
Some travel to NYPA facilities and transmission assets may be required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task with competing priorities
Collaborative and team orientated
Customer-focused especially when dealing with vendors and internal clients
Ability to design Mobile and Desktop GIS applications to support Utility Operations for both office and field operations.
The use of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for utilities. Knowledge of Transmission Systems and maintenance of land records.
The ability to work with multiple disciplines throughout NYPA and well as outside agencies to get data and information unrequired to complete assigned tasks.
Education, Experience and Certifications
Must be enrolled in an undergraduate program pursuing a degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, or Environmental Studies and have a minimum of 3 years of college coursework.
