Writing Contest Intern

Scholastic Inc - New York, NY

Internship

Scholastic Classroom Magazines is looking for a few interns to work for our best-selling Language Arts magazines: Scope, Storyworks, and Storyworks Jr.

We’re looking for folks who are interested in education and writing, are highly organized, detail oriented, flexible, positive, patient, and get nerdily excited about spreadsheets and checking things off their to-do list.

Scope, Storyworks, and Storyworks Jr. are used by millions of kids in classrooms across the country to teach reading and writing. The magazines feature nonfiction articles, short stories, read aloud plays, infographics, and more. Scope (www.scope.scholastic.com) is read by students in grades 6-8, Storyworks (www.storyworks.scholastic.com) is for grades 4-6, and Storyworks Jr. (www.storyworksjr.scholastic.com) is for grades 2-3. The magazines feature 1-5 writing contests in each issue, which require students to respond to a writing prompt based on an article or short story in the magazine. We receive hundreds of submissions for each contest from students across the country. It would be your job to read these submissions, select the winners, and oversee the distribution of the prizes.

Responsibilities include:

  • Reading contest entries written by students
  • Selecting entries that feature the best writing and determining winners according to a rubric
  • Creating letters of congratulations, certificates, and prize packages
  • Mailing prizes to winners
  • Sending recaps of the contest submissions to the magazine editors and providing both quantitative and qualitative analyses of the contests
  • Communicating with the editors in a timely fashion about the progress of each contest
  • Maintaining spreadsheets on contests, winner information, and prize status
  • Maintaining a physical file of student entries and archiving content as needed
  • Transcribing and editing certain entries for online publication
  • Occasionally helping with non-contest-related editorial tasks

Hours are flexible but we are looking for folks to work in our SoHo office and commit to 10-14 hours a week, starting the week of September 23, 2019. We require you to stick around with us until late June/early July 2020.

We are conducting interviews starting the week of August 26, so let us know your availabilities.
