Under the supervision of the Vice President of Finance/Chief Financial Officer, or authorized designee, performs the managerial functions of planning, directing, controlling, organizing and staffing Health Information Management and Centralized Transcription Services. Is responsible for the maintenance of a health information system responsive to the needs of the patients, Medical Staff, Administration and personnel. Serves as a reference person to Medical Center personnel and staff in matters regarding medical legal issues and effective flow of patient information, release of patient information, compilation of information required by federal, state and/or accrediting agencies, and effective documentation of information.

Responsible for coordination of HIM department so as to be compliant with the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization (JCAHO) Standards, West Virginia Medical Institute Peer Review Organization, and Federal/State guidelines.

FOR MANAGEMENT:

  • Effectively communicates with employees.
  • Develops and implements short and long term goals and objectives which are congruent with St. Mary’s strategic plan, mission and values.
  • Exercises appropriate administration over areas of responsibility.
  • Ascertains compliance with applicable laws, regulations and safety standards and takes corrective action where non-compliance is identified.
  • Facilitates the department’s performance improvement activities and implements actions to meet applicable quality indicators.
  • Acts as coach, guide and facilitator creating an environment that stimulates employees to realize their full potential, hires and trains competent employees, and assures performance appraisals and competency assessments are completed in a timely manner.
  • Rounds in departments, initiates change and corrects issues where appropriate.
  • Manages “up” in the organization by executing directions and plans from superiors and administration independent of personal likes and dislikes.
  • Effectively manages the department through effective time management and organizational skills.

EDUCATION:

Graduate of an American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) approved school with a degree in Health Information Technology. Current credential by AHIMA as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).

EXPERIENCE:

Two (2) years of previous supervisory experience in a medical record service preferred.

SKILLS:

Knowledge of various systems within a medical record service, particularly transcription, filing,

coding, indexing, and outpatient clinical records. The ability to manage a large Medical Record

Service efficiently and effectively.
