Position Summary:
The McHugh Lab in the Department of Bioengineering at Rice University is seeking a full-time, in-person Laboratory Manager. The primary role of this administrative position is to support lab members and their research, which focuses on developing novel drug and vaccine delivery systems. The Laboratory Manager will be an indispensable member of the lab who will regularly communicate with Dr. McHugh and other members of the McHugh Lab and provide office-based assistance. Key responsibilities of this position include:
- Coordinating projects with multiple contributors
- Onboarding personnel
- Monitoring grant spending
- Participating in the preparation of progress reports
- Administratively supporting grant submissions
- Ordering supplies
- Managing laboratory protocols
Ideal Candidate Statement:
The ideal candidate would be highly organized and an effective communicator capable of working with an interdisciplinary team that ranges from faculty to the undergraduate level. They would also be highly skilled at using a computer, exhibit good attention to detail, and have an interest in medicine and/or biology.
Workplace Requirements
This position is on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in-person at 6500 Main Street, Houston, TX 77030. The candidate selected for this position must be able to work in an office environment. The dress code is casual. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change.
Proposed Hiring Range: $56,000-$65,000 annual salary depending on qualifications.
This position is funded by a grant, soft and/or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of funding.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree
- In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted (can be deleted)
- 1+ years of experience in lab management or a role requiring extensive communication, administration, or project management skills
- In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted
Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Good collaborative, judgement, leadership, negotiation, problem solving, and critical thinking skills with attention to details and willingness to take initiative
- Proficient and comprehensive knowledge of project management including the ability to predict and evaluate potential risks and create solutions before they arise
- Ability to work in a team environment, actively participates, motivates and follows-though, as needed
- Strong organizational skills to plan and schedule
- Comfort level making independent decisions
Preferences:
- Bachelor’s degree in a natural science field (biology, materials science, chemistry), engineering, communications, administration or a related field
- Project Management Professional (PMP)
- Certified Research Administrator (CRA) preferred
Essential Functions:
- Performs activities in support of multiple research projects
- Manages the day-to-day activities of the McHugh Lab
- Interacts closely with the PI (Dr. McHugh) to provide administrative support
- Provides support for grant and manuscript submission
- Orders lab supplies and manages the service contracts on equipment
- Coordinates the onboarding of new personnel
- Monitors grant spending and progress reports
- Assists with IACUC and IRB protocol submissions
- Performs all other duties as assigned
