Preschool and childcare center directors assist staff with caring for and teaching children. Preschool and childcare center directors supervise and lead staffs, design program plans, oversee daily activities, and prepare budgets. You are responsible for all aspects of the centers program.

Duties & Responsibilities:

-Administers, plans, manages and controls the daily activities of the center.

-Ensures the facility meets state licensing requirements for child care centers.

-Ensures the health and safety of children.

-Provides prudent supervision of all staff and volunteers.

-Interviews, hires, trains, mentors and evaluates staff.

-Maintains all record keeping of facility, children and staff files and ensures all records meet licensing and regulatory requirements. (i.e. licensing, Better Beginnings, State Pre-K).

-Uploads required documentation to Childcare Manager as necessary.

-Builds rapport with parents; confers with them on program procedures and activities.

-Confers with teaching staff regarding children's development and recommends methods of addressing challenges and encouraging learning experiences.

-Maintains family & agency confidentiality, restricting information to those who need to know.

-Holds teaching staff accountable for weekly lesson plans and screenings.

-Visits classrooms and observe teaching methods and activities 15 minutes weekly.

-Performs formal observations in preparation for performance reviews at least quarterly.

-Establishes professional development plans for each staff member.

-Participates in in-service and training opportunities required by agency.

-Obtains the required professional development hours annually.

-Performs duties in classroom and other non-administrative areas as required by agency.

-Completion of Program Administration Scale Basics training and Environmental Rating Scale training within 6 months of hire.


Directors must meet one of the following educational requirements:

-Bachelors Degree or higher Degree in Early Childhood, Child Development or related field from a regionally accredited college or university

-Bachelor's Degree in a non-related field from a regionally accredited college or university plus one of the following: Four years of experience in early childhood education, Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) or Birth - Pre K Credential.

-Associates degree in Early Childhood, Child Development or a related field, plus 6 years of experience in Early Childhood Education.

-Eight years of experience in Early Childhood Ed. and completion of one of the following within 2 years of employment: CDA Credential, Birth - Pre K Credential, Directors Credential (ACPAC) or Technical Certificate in Early Childhood Education.

Skills & Abilities:

-Early Childhood development knowledge and experience.

-Knowledge of Environment Rating Scales and Developmentally Appropriate Practices.

-Knowledge of Government-Subsidized Early Childhood Program Requirements.

-Professional oral and written communication skills, problem solving, and priority setting skills as well as maintaining an overall positive and professional attitude/disposition.

-Ability to use the computer to input data and operate Childcare Manager, Microsoft Office and other software to maintain operations.

-Ability to make decisions on behalf of children and protect their well being

-Must be able to manage confidential information.
