Provide technical leadership for the development and procurement of Mechanical components for existing and new vendors for the Mechanical commodity in the Medtronic Diabetes Business Unit in Northridge, LA. This position is being created to develop sourcing engineering to support the sourcing and development of our vendor base to support NPI, quality, delivery and cost requirements of the business unit. This is critical position with a critical commodity upon which the entire mechanical platform is based.

This individual will engage with cross functional teams in Diabetes like R&D, Mfg, Quality and Regulatory to ensure that the mechanical components are manufactured and delivered by Vendors with required level of quality. This position will work directly with vendors to develop and improve their processes that support the delivery of the components to support the business demands. Through subject matter expertise and previous experience working with vendors, the sourcing engineer will ensure that the vendors are manufacturing the components to a high capability and quality level. Partnering closely with Medtronic Diabetes’ supply chain, supplier quality and other key functional groups, this individual will work to identify ramp, improvement and efficiency efforts required at the vendor and then execute those efforts effectively to meet the quality and ramp demand numbers. In addition, this individual will also be responsible for working with R&D for future mechanical requirements and also support front end technology development followed by vendor selection for the next generation plastics.

A Day in the Life

  • Provide subject matter expert on mechanical component sourcing and future technology development for next generation pumps and sensors to include tooling and processing knowledge.
  • Responsible for defining, planning and execution of improvement projects for mechanical components, including process improvements and operational excellence improvements using DMAIC/six sigma/LEAN principles to drive high capability processes at high capacity
  • Responsible for developing vendors from a capability and capacity standpoint to ensure that the components are delivered to the requirements of Quality and quantity as required by the business unit
  • Manage Supplier Change Notice lifecycle and change management ECRs/ ECOs to ensure timely closure of supplier and component changes
  • Liaison with R&D to develop next generation suppliers and technology for plastics for next generation platforms
  • Lead co-located teams with cross functional expertise leading different large scale projects
  • Report out on project status, vendor and component development strategies to cross functional peer teams and senior leadership.
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
  • Provides technical engineering expertise and leadership to the Supply Management organization and suppliers, serving as the technical liaison between Medtronic design requirements and suppliers' technical capability to assure that robust margins are achieved and maintained.
  • Responsibilities may include: facilitation of Lean-Sigma continuous improvement with suppliers, support and/or implementation of structural Early Supplier Involvement (ESI) process in new product development to achieve Design for Manufacturability and Reliability; identification of key technical capabilities of supply base; establishment of control plans and monitoring systems for supplier processes; identification and management of risk associated with low margins between supplier processes and design requirements; facilitation and reporting of progress of supplier corrective actions as assigned by relevant CAPA system; providing core team input of Design for Sourcing/Manufacturability into new designs; long term technology/supplier scanning as input into product/technology road maps.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements

Education/Experience Required
  • Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of experience, or advanced degree.
Nice to Have
  • Mechanical/ Plastics/Polymer/Chemical/Materials/ Mechanical Engineering degree preferred.
  • Knowledge base of both processing and tooling engineering design
  • Knowledge performing validations associated including experience IQ/OQ/PQs, Gage R&Rs, TMVs, PFMEAs/DFMEAS,etc
  • Expertise with supplier quality management and/or managing and monitoring supplier quality
  • Direct experience managing and developing vendors
  • Understanding and previous knowledge of component/product development lifecycle in the regulated medical device industry is preferred
  • Understanding of the ISO13485 quality system requirements and application in the medical device environment is preferred
  • Understanding of strategies in developing vendors from a capacity growth and quality improvement is preferred
  • Direct experience with planning and developing complex projects with expertise leading and managing cross functional project teams (project planning experience strongly preferred )
  • Experience with managing supplier change management system preferred.
  • Very effective communication skills strongly preferred (includes good presentation skills and data based communication )
