Hospice Chaplain Job Description/Posting

Valley Regional Hospice Inc., a hospice service provider is currently seeking a Chaplain/Spiritual Counselor to join our team in Fresno, CA. Valley Regional Hospice Inc. is committed to exceeding the expectations of every patient and family member they serve, and believes that making a hospice care choice is not a decision to relinquish hope, it is a determination to redefine it. Working in partnership with the other members of the patient’s care team (nurse, social worker, hospice aide, and volunteer), our Chaplain/Spiritual Counselor will support medical care from a spiritual, emotional, and existential perspective.

Primary Responsibilities will include:

  • Performing spiritual assessments of patients, considering mental, emotional, physical, existential and spiritual stresses, and respond with appropriate counseling and care
  • Develops an individualized spiritual/existentially-focused plan of care which demonstrates an effort to work in close collaboration with local clergy whenever desired by the patient, and provides spiritual support as needed and defined by the patient/family
  • Make spiritual consultations
  • Provides written reports based on patient interactions and coordinates with other members of the interdisciplinary team to develop a personal care plan for the patient

Successful candidates must have:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Religious Studies or a related subject, and a Master's degree in Theology or Divinity preferred
  • Ordained, commissioned or credentialed according to the practices of an organized religious group and has completed one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)
  • Completed specific training such as common spiritual issues in death and dying; belief systems of comparative religions related to death and dying; spiritual assessment skills; individualizing care to patient beliefs; and varied spiritual practices/rituals

Other requirements include:

  • Hospice Experience helpful
  • Experience with Kinnser or other EMR not required but highly desired
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Respecting the patient’s privacy and maintaining confidentiality
  • Current California driver’s license and automobile liability insurance
  • CPR Certification

Job Type: Contract

Salary: $24.00 to $28.00 /hour
