Full Job Description
The Senior Director, Community Relations is responsible for leading Danaher’s global community investment strategy designed to advance our commitment to improving the quality of life around the world by helping realize life’s potential. Key responsibilities include overseeing corporate and foundation giving, as well as associate giving and volunteerism; managing day-to-day operations and staff; facilitating public-private partnerships and stakeholder engagement; and serving as company spokesperson on topics relevant to the company’s and foundation’s community investment initiatives and results.
Reporting to Vice President – Corporate Communications, the leader who fills this newly created role must be able to hit the ground running in a fast-pace, highly collaborative and rapidly changing environment. The leader must have excellent strategic thinking skills with strong knowledge of corporate social responsibility; and be proactive, flexible, detail-oriented, committed to excellence and continuous improvement, comfortable working with others to lead through influence, and mindful of the broader external environment.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Collaborate with Danaher senior leadership and Foundation Board to develop and maintain global community investment strategy that supports the overall goals the Company and the Foundation, annual budget and all related guidelines, policies, processes and procedures.
Oversee Danaher Foundation operations including, but not limited to: recruiting and training new Directors, working with Board to plan and run meetings, and working with relevant Danaher teams (i.e., Accounting, Tax, Finance, Legal, HR, etc.) and vendors on all fiscal and legal obligations and responsibilities.
Implement and oversee associate community engagement, volunteer and giving programs, including Matching Gifts, Dollars for Doers and Volunteer Time-Off (in partnership with our various operating companies).
In partnership with IT and HR, identify and implement a grants management system (including online applications) and an associate giving and volunteerism management platform, and oversee the training and utilization of said tools among relevant staff and field giving committee members.
In collaboration with the Communications team, oversee the development of internal and external communications strategies, tactics and content generation/development. Represent Danaher and the Foundation at external events, meetings and forums, and serve as chief spokesperson on all philanthropic-related matters, including the media.
Oversee the identification and cultivation of strategic partnerships with targeted organizations that align with our key focus areas (i.e., STEM education, healthcare and the environment).
In collaboration with the College & University Relations team, oversee strategic investments designed to enhance the company’s reputation with, and develop and recruit talent from, our top post-secondary schools.
In collaboration with the Diversity & Inclusion team, oversee investments with strategic external partners and develop approaches to engage and leverage our Associate Resource Groups in Danaher’s community investment strategy.
Develop annual goals and performance indicators to evaluate impact of philanthropic investments and associate programs, as well as processes and procedures to track, measure and report results and outcomes.
Serve as a subject matter expert by benchmarking our peers and competitors, monitoring industry trends and best practices, and keeping abreast of regulatory changes.
Lead community relations team in the execution of their duties; encourage and support their growth and professional development through coaching and mentoring.
Minimum 15+ years’ experience working in corporate philanthropy, community relations/affairs, social responsibility, stakeholder engagement or related position in a senior leadership capacity, preferably with a major corporation (Fortune 500).
Experience in building, implementing and leading successful community investment strategies and programs that align community needs, employee passions and business goals, including corporate and foundation giving, as well as employee giving and volunteerism.
Experience driving change management with a proven ability to influence and drive initiatives across all functions, levels and regions.
Superior verbal, written and interpersonal skills and demonstrated experience working collaboratively, yet in a leadership role, with cross-functional teams and C-suite level leaders.
Excellent leadership, management and supervisory skills including the ability to effectively manage teams of professionals in a large, matrixed corporate environment.
The executive maturity, emotional intelligence, political savvy and ability to navigate ambiguous systems.
Knowledge of, tax and legal requirements associated with corporate philanthropy.
Understanding of financial management, especially budgeting, reconciliation, Patriot Act and international compliance.
Familiarity with STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), healthcare, environment and disaster grantmaking.
Knowledge of grants management and employee giving and volunteerism systems and technologies.
Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally (up to 25% of time).
Bachelor’s degree in public or business administration, public affairs/relations, political science, non-profit management, corporate responsibility, sustainability or related field; master’s degree preferred.
