The Ethical Culture Fieldston School (ECFS) invites applications, nominations, and inquiries as it embarks upon a search for a Head of School who will begin on July 1, 2022. Who We Are
The Ethical Culture Fieldston School offers a world-class progressive education for 1,700 Pre-K–12th grade students at two historic campuses in Manhattan and the Bronx. Founded in 1878 as The Workingman’s School by humanitarian Felix Adler, ECFS remains committed to his vision for ethical learning, academic excellence, and progressive education. The core of the educational program is the study and practice of ethics, where students explore and think critically about what they are learning in order to question and evaluate their own actions, choices, and decisions, as well as those of other individuals and communities. Who You Are
The Head of School will be a collaborative leader who inspires vision, fosters trust, and promotes transparency, overseeing all day-to-day aspects of life at ECFS. They will work in a highly relational, visible, and authentic way with students, faculty, staff, families, alumni, and trustees to support their experience in and beyond the classroom. The Head of School will embrace and communicate a vision established by the founder for progressive pedagogy, ethical learning, and academic excellence in all aspects of school life.
About the Position
The Head of School has overall responsibility for managing the School and reports to the Board of Trustees, who focus on governance. Together, the Board and the Head have a shared goal of stewarding the financial health of the School to further its mission and achieve strategic priorities. The Head of School oversees the Administrative Council, who are leaders in all functional areas of the School, to ensure that students, faculty, staff, families, and alumni are supported in a manner consistent with the core tenets of ECFS.
ECFS looks forward to the exciting opportunities, challenges, and possibilities in the 2022-2023 academic year and beyond. The next Head of School will lead a strategic planning process with the Board of Trustees that will establish ECFS’s direction and priorities in the decade ahead.
Qualities and Qualifications
The most successful candidates will:
- Embrace the values of progressive education.
- Model and grow ethical learning and leadership within the adult and student communities.
- Demonstrate excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills.
- Display curiosity and an unabashed love of learning.
- Demonstrate collaboration and transparency; communicate with authenticity in decisions and decision-making processes.
- Understand and support shared governance and serve as a key strategic partner to the Board of Trustees.
- Demonstrate experience leading a unionized faculty and staff, and a senior administrative team.
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and skill set of the full range of experiences within an independent school environment, especially classroom teaching and learning.
- Possess a proven track record of affecting and influencing change through a collaborative and inclusive style.
- Possess ten or more years of directly related experience in progressively responsible leadership positions in an educational institution.
