Under the direction of the Director of Telecommunications, this position applies independent judgement as well as knowledge and expertise in planning, designing and maintaining the Data Center operating hardware, systems and related software. The incumbent must have well-rounded technical skills and experience as well as the ability to work both independently and in teams.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises staff and provides technical leadership in analyzing, designing and implementing systems. Monitors implementation schedules and resources; and reports progress to all stakeholders.
Performs difficult or complex tasks and works in concert with other computer/technical professionals or University personnel to ensure uninterrupted operation of the Data Center including out of band management, environmental monitoring and alarm systems.
Conducts needs analysis and feasibility studies for data center computer systems; serves as an interface between users, vendors, and university staff.Collaborates with stakeholders to devise project plans for expansion and/or modification to data center computer infrastructure.
Develops requirements for, designs, programs, supervises testing, implements production, trains users, provides documentation and takes other actions as needed to ensure continuous operation of the Data Center infrastructure (space, cooling, power, physical security/access control, monitoring, out of band management and related systems).
Responsible for developing and maintaining a physical security and safety plan for the data center and related spaces, including the policies, procedures and periodic review of such.
Provides written procedures, standards, and manuals for effective administration of assigned projects and operations.Develops and recommends new policies and policy revisions to management.
Maintains technical expertise through review of professional journals, attendance at conferences and seminars, and other professional activities.
Develops capacity plans for future development of projects, and interface to overall data center plans.
Selects products for review, researches new products and product upgrades relevant to assigned projects, coordinates testing, recommends acquisitions, and coordinates implementation.
Represents the unit, department, and/or University at internal and external functions such as construction meetings, requests for co-location, staff meetings as required.
Performs related duties as required.
Bachelor’s degree in computer, engineering, MIS, programming or related field, or equivalent combination of training and experience.
A minimum of 5 years’ experience in Data Center operations and management of personnel and infrastructure supporting a Data Center, such as power, cooling, network, storage, server and monitoring systems.
Demonstrated experience with Data Center management tools, applications, methods and procedures.
Demonstrated abilities in analytical reasoning and problem solving.
Experience with a formal project management methodology and experience working with diverse groups in a project team setting.
Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in project development and administration.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and excellent attention to detail.
Evidence of extremely high level of motivation, initiative, independence and responsibility.
Experience with researching and working with new computing technologies.
Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and direction.
Ability to report to work at the Storrs campus due to Emergency Support status.
Demonstrated knowledge of data center network infrastructure and operations.
Advanced degree in a computer related field.
Professional Certifications aligned with data center and computer infrastructure such as Cisco CCNA-Data Center, IDCA Data Center Operations/Engineering Specialist or similar.
Significant knowledge of contemporary Data Center systems, monitoring systems, and equipment.
Programming experience in Visual Basic/Python or other similar language.
Experience with Data Center and computer infrastructure management systems such as Avocent Trellis, APC InfraStruXure, DCIM, Cacti, Zabbix, WhatsUp, or other network and system management tools.
This is a full-time, permanent position. As an Emergency Support position, the incumbent is expected to report to his/her regular duty location even if non-emergency staff are not required to do so.
