The School of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Resident And Fellow Wellness Counselor.
The UW School of Medicine offers 100+ residency and clinical fellowship programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), two Board-approved fellowship programs, and approximately 100 non- accredited clinical fellowship programs. Approximately 1,300 residents and fellows conduct their ACGME-residency or fellowship training at UW’s primary training sites, including the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Seattle Children's Hospital, and the VA Puget Sound Health Care System.
This position supports the Wellness Service mission to help trainees and their significant others/spouses cope with common stresses of Medical Residency and Fellowship training by promoting healthy work-life balance. The position is primarily in the evening hours, the time when there is highest demand for/availability to utilize the service. The provision of services in the evening allows the counseling service to meet its goal of breaking down barriers to seeking care.
This position works in direct support of the UW directive of supporting employees with work/life balance by providing mental health resources to help employees decrease stress. This includes emergency crisis counseling, holistic wellness support, and helping build a community of support.
The successful candidate must have skill in three distinctly different areas: mental health counseling, writing, and advocacy, and be able to smoothly transition from one role to another with ease.
Provide individual and couples counseling utilizing a variety of clinical approaches as appropriate. Maintain confidential documentation of the services (Chart notes are NOT part of an electronic medical record and there is no billing). Review cases with the Director of Resident and Fellow Wellness.
Report daily on utilization of the Wellness Counseling Service via the electronic data base created for the Wellness Service.
Provide crisis intervention services as needed. Make referrals to and consult with GME’s community psychiatrist for those seeking medication with our and learning specialists as needed. Consult with the Washington Physicians Health Program as needed to make appropriate referrals for residents/fellows with impairing mental health conditions, and/or with alcohol, drug abuse, or other addictive disorders.
Maintain an active network of primary care providers, community mental health providers and couples’ therapists who understand the issues typical to residents, fellows, and their partners. Facilitate referrals within this network for those seeking individual or couples’ work, long-term psychotherapy, medication, and help with issues beyond our scope.
Utilize and contribute to our library of self-help and mental health resource materials.
Share responsibility for writing the Wellness Corner, our weekly electronic newsletter.
Master's Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology or comparable field, and Licensure in a mental health field recognized by the State of Washington (LICSW, LMHC, etc).
Must be experienced in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health disorders including suicidality, behavior disorders, and post-partum depression.
Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.
Ability to work independently with a high degree of reliability, accuracy and productivity.
Ability to handle confidential information responsibly.
Experience and comfort working with victims of interpersonal violence, with racially and ethnically diverse populations, and with LGBTQ clients.
Familiarity and practical experience working with models of time-limited and evidence-based psychotherapy.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
This position is based primarily at Seattle Children’s Hospital, but may include an office at the UW Medical Center campus and/or Harborview Medical Center, as well as occasional provision of services at the VA, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance or Fred Hutchinson Medical Center.
