Environmental Intern

Through on-the-job training and job rotation, the goal is to offer candidates the opportunity to develop competencies and capabilities that will prepare them for a successful career in the environmental field. Our internship program is designed to provide candidates with a variety of challenging experiences in multiple areas of the environmental business including, Field Services, Environmental Health & Safety and Waste Coordination.


Interns will be assinged to one or more of the following areas or development:


Perform site activities as directed by the Supervisor or Project Manager in accordance with EnviroServe SOGs
Use small hand-tools, squeegees, shovels and brooms as well as wipes, absorbent boom and pads to contain and remediate impacted soils and waters
Must have the ability to perform manual work requiring periods of extensive physical exertion and must have the ability to carry out written and oral instructions and be able to meet the work schedule with dependability and consistency
Must be able to drive a motor vehicle and operate a powered piece of equipment. Ability to operator a backhoe preferred but not required
Learn, understand, and follow all safety, operational, and company rules, regulations and responsibilities
Monitor own hours worked to maintain compliance with company and DOT policies
Assist in the set up and tear down of job site


Maintain compliance records for all DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, EPA, applicable Federal and State laws
Manage driver qualification files; driver background checks, DOT physicals, MVRs, reference checks
Manage fleet compliance program including vehicle inspections, license and registration, insurance and permits
Manage driver compliance records including driver safety, road tests, Hours of Service, MVRs
Provide technical support on safety & health topics (OSHA)
Work closely with EH&S Manager to coordinate employee training to ensure compliance with DOT, OSHA applicable Federal and State laws
Ensure compliance with recordkeeping, reporting and permitting
Assist in the development of safety procedures, guidelines and best practices
Monitor DOT, safety and health regulations and provide advance notice of pending legislation
Promote safety and health awareness through safety bulletins, memos and meetings


Prepare and submit waste profiles ensuring that profiles are complete and accurate
Obtain competitive disposal pricing from a variety of disposal facilities
Assist in the preparation and review of manifests
Review analytical data to determine waste classification
Create, organize and maintain waste files
Work directly with clients in order to educate them if necessary and facilitate the timely movement of wastes from their sites to the selected disposal facilities
Conduct facility inspections
Ensure that all waste is documented and tracked on the waste log board and monitored daily
Ensure that no waste is on EnviroServe property for longer than 9 days
Provide technical assistance to all offices
Prepare and ship samples and review chains of custody for accuracy
Resolve manifest and non-conforming load discrepancies
Provide accurate and efficient customer service
Comply with all pertinent federal, state and local regulations
Maintain a daily task list and journal of activities
Provide for the response, management, and supervision of projects as assigned
Selected onsite project management of lab pack and waste characterization projects
Flexible to changes in the work schedule/extended workdays and be available to respond on short notice. Willingness to travel out of town for overnight projects on short notice
Strong personal and professional integrity and ability to work independently or lead a team
Superior organizational, communication and interpersonal skills are essential
Well-developed written and verbal communication, organization, leadership and supervision skills
Proficient use of Microsoft software applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Local and regional travel
Must be able to read and write, and communicate effectively in English
Willing to follow and enforce governmental regulatory procedures, industry practices, and have a strong understanding and willingness to follow and enforce safety procedures
Ability to pass pre-employment, random and or post-accident/injury substance abuse screening, and obtain applicable medical examiners certification


High school diploma or GED required
40-hr HAZWOPER certification
Valid driver license and reliable transportation required

Physical Requirements

This position is required to work outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions
Must be able to work outdoors in various climates for up to 12 hours
Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds on an occasional basis
Must be able to climb steps and ladders
Must have the ability to work, walk, and stand on uneven ballast surfaces for long periods of time
Should have the ability to use basic hand tools

Work Environment

Employees will be required to work outdoors. Driving conditions may be less than ideal. Employees can be exposed to adverse conditions (including but not limited to rain and muddy conditions, rocky soils, snow and ice, extreme temperatures). Employees are frequently required to wear PPE, such as respirators and protective clothing.
