Job Summary (Purpose):
Directs and manages the overall safety program for the region, working in close alliance with the region OVP. Provides strong and visible leadership to the employees, field safety managers, front line leaders, area directors, and region management in the design, implementation and performance monitoring of safety management systems and programs. Responsible to develop and implement the region’s strategy for reducing and preventing occupational injuries, vehicle incidents and liability claims. Participates in the development of safety/operational standards, procedures and policies and leads the implementation of these systems and programs to improve the regions ability to meet industry safety / compliance standards and promote the AmeriGas Safety Beliefs & Principles. Provide engineering and technical support to the region’s operating personnel to resolve safety related plant and propane distribution system problems and related capital improvements. Provide direction and supervision to a team of direct reports (field safety managers) assigned to each area within the respective region.

This position reports directly to the Group Director - Safety with a dotted line reporting relationship to the respective Operations Vice President.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Assists in the establishment and development of Company safety management systems and programs and successfully leads the implementation of these systems and programs within the region with the goal of reducing injuries, vehicle incidents and liability claims. Monitor the success of the programs and develop and implement corrective actions and remedial plans to continually improve safety performance.
Oversee audits and other safety related activities of the region field safety managers.
Develop and lead the field safety managers in region training efforts for field personnel in all areas of Company safety policies and industry regulatory compliance. Assess compliance through auditing and other means of evaluation. Develop and implement corrective actions and remediation plans as required.
Monitor and report the status of compliance on major safety programs (OPS, dispenser units, vehicle incidents, employee injuries, CSA, driver qualification, etc.) within the region. Evaluate the accuracy and reliability of reported information.
Develop strategies and provide direction for implementation and successful completion of all safety related training in the region. As the situation and subject matter requires, develop course content and conduct training for regional employees and managers. Assist area directors, area coordinators, and field safety managers in coordinating and scheduling the resources to conduct training.
Provide support to field personnel in order to resolve equipment and vehicle technical/safety problems. As necessary, coordinate with the Field Service Center and others to resolve these issues.
Provide technical advice and oversight to field personnel for safety related capital projects in the region to ensure that assets are cost-effectively installed and operate in a fully functional, safe manner to proper standards. Review and approve expenditures for field safety managers
Perform investigations of major incidents as required. Coordinate investigations with local authorities and other Company representatives. Coordinate and perform emergency response activities as a situation demands.
Provide technical support and liaison with the Safety Network and the safety performance teams, such as area and region safety committees. Lead special assignments or project task teams to further Company safety initiatives. Provide safety management and technical support to other regions as required.
Coordinate, communicate and provide liaison with federal, state and local authorities regarding applicable operational standards and related inspections.
Recruit, hire, and train new field safety managers to fill vacancies and provide on-going opportunities for continuing education and professional development. Including, coaching for improvement and taking corrective actions as appropriate.
Conduct annual merit reviews and prepare evaluations of FSM performance. Develop key performance objectives that support Company goals and initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Directs Safety at the Regional level and must be a proven leader with field operations with skills including teamwork, training, employee development and business management. Demonstrated writing skills and the ability to communicate effectively to large groups. Ability to utilize personal computer offsite and communicate while in remote locations.
Competency in all relevant chemical industry safety codes and federal regulations.

Education and Experience Required:
4 year Degree in safety or a technical discipline required.
10 years + in a Safety related field requiring ability to manage and supervise over a large geographic area.
Experience in chemical storage and distribution equipment design, operations and maintenance is preferred and / or highly desirable.
Computer skills (Microsoft Office and basic internet) required.

Working conditions:
Regional Safety Director typically has heavy travel schedule, with exposure to hazardous or caustic chemicals and outside weather conditions, along with vehicles, moving equipment, mechanical parts and flammable materials, vibration and loud noise. The employee will be working in both office and external work environments.
