$6,065.00 - $7,075.00 Per Month ($72,780.00 - $84,900.00 Annually)

Position Summary
Position is a senior level Research Technician Ill. The incumbent will help train and supervise both undergraduate and graduate students in Genentech Foundation (GF) Scholars Program who are conducting biomedical research, as well as assist in managing aspects of the GF grant budgets. This position will receive lead work from the Genentech Foundation Program Director and Co-Director and will report to the CoSE Associate Dean. This position will be fully funded by the Genentech Foundation Grant through the University Corporation. This position is a temporary appointment and will be renewed annually contingent upon grant funding. Special Conditions: Per Article 9.49.d of the CSUEU collective bargaining agreement, positions funded by non-recurring grants, contracts or special projects with beginning and ending dates cannot earn permanent status. Since this position is funded by the Genentech Foundation Grant through University Corporation, funds are renewed annually. In the event the grant is not renewed this position will end, normally with a two-week notice.
Position Information
Train and supervise Genentech Foundation Scholars
- Introduce confocal microscopy (smartphone microscope adaptors), tissue culture, wnt (Wingless-related integration site) - catenin signaling pathway, transfections, luciferase reporter assay and analysis.
- Instruct Scholars on Cell Biology imaging of Drosophila normal and mutant embryos using Image A software.
- PCR analysis, protein, RNA and DNA (nucleic acid) sequence determination and analysis
- Design and carry out experiments and research with GF Scholars to provide research experience and training in preparation for a STEM career in line with goals and objectives of the GF Program.
- Train and supervise GF Scholars in using DNA purification, sequence analysis (Geneious software), sequence alignments, genotype vs phenotype, mutation analysis, bacterial transformations, screening colonies, etc.
- Supervise junior and senior Genentech Foundation Scholars conducting independent research projects to meet research experience levels required for MS and PhD program entrance.
- Inform and train students in how to interpret research reported in the STEM literature to develop independence in trouble shooting and adapting approaches and implementation of variations to solve complex lab and computational problems/questions.
Research and Presentations
- Wnt (Wingless-related integration site) secretory pathway, Western blots/analysis of Wnt secretion in selection of mutants generate for this study with Image J and graph generation, student t-tests.
- Analysis and preparation of figures/techniques (Western blot, sequence alignments & conservation of protein
sequence for animal models).
- Use technical expertise to design new experimental protocols using data generated by above experiments.
- Interpret research data for publication.
- Present experimental results at national conferences (ASCB & ABRCMS).
Supervise weekly Colloquia to prepare Freshmen Sophomore and Junior GF Scholars for research
- Prepare Freshmen during academic year for 8-week summer Directed Research program for students
intending on pursuing careers in the fields of biomedical science and medicine.
- Prepare Sophomores for application to Junior summer and independent research in faculty labs.
- Prepare Juniors for participation in 8-week summer Doctoral Prep Program (as co-Director with Dr. Chen).
- Prepare outcome reports and other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Education equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university. (Additional qualifying professional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
Thorough knowledge of research techniques, including the planning of studies and investigations, the determining of variables and the developing of reference materials; thorough knowledge of research reporting techniques; general knowledge of machine tabulation techniques and the programming of data; thorough knowledge of the techniques and treatment of data such as simple correlation methods, trend analysis, frequency distribution analysis, sampling techniques, hypothesis testing and methods of interval estimation; familiarity with the principles of personnel management and effective supervision and ability to direct the work of others.
Ability to reason logically and capacity for independent and creative thinking on research problems; ability to develop techniques for handling a large variety of detailed data and ability to analyze these data; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; ability to speak and write effectively; ability to analyze situations accurately and to adopt an effective course of action.
Three years of progressively responsible technical research or statistical experience including or supplemented by one year in the interpretation and graphic presentation of data. Graduate study in the social sciences, economics, mathematics, statistics, public or business administration or engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis
Preferred Qualifications
M.S. degree in a field of biology and at least 2 years of post-M.S. experience, as well as 5 years of supervisory experience.
Possession of strong molecular and cellular lab skills as well as experience working with high-end imaging equipment such as confocal and scanning electron microscopes.
Familiarity with the following lab skills: PCR (standard, quantitative PCR, and RT-PCR) amplification/detection of DNA, cDNA and miRNA, Standard cloning techniques including restriction enzyme digestion, DNA ligation, agarose gel electrophoresis, bacterial transformation, DNA sequencing, Northern blotting, in situ hybridization, Southern blotting and GFP reporter assays. SOS-PAGE, Western blotting, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, cryo-sectioning with staining/antibody treatment, protein extraction (by French press, sonicator, ultracentrifugation), immunoprecipitation, live and fixed cell microscopy and imaging (phase, fluorescence, confocal).
Proficiency in using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop, Illustrator, Salesforce as well as with using web-based analysis programs, including NCBI suite and ExPASy.
Environmental/Physical/Special
Given the research environment, it may be needed to work some weekends and holidays.
