Full Job Description
Performs phlebotomy procedures per requirements at each site (may include venipuncture, arterial collection, nasopharyngeal collections, capillary draws, chain of custody collections, swab collections) and patient registration as needed. Communicates clearly and effectively when responding to phone requests from customers and coworkers. Assures that the pre-analytical duties of specimen collection, order entry, and/or specimen processing are performed accurately and quickly, following all identification and labeling policies, and utilizing appropriate specimen collection techniques. Utilizes critical thinking and identifies general specimen problems and resolves or directs those problems to the appropriate individual. Prepares specimens for referral to other laboratories. Inventories, orders and stocks lab supplies. Prepares supplies for clients and prepares printed patient reports for delivery by mail or courier. Maintains department equipment, utilizes department computer systems, and documents information. The Lab Assistant will follow all policies and procedures. Performs waived and moderately complex laboratory testing, accurately following laboratory procedures for test performance, quality control, reagent preparation and instrument maintenance. The Lab Assistant mentors and helps train, takes charge duties, and is flexible to work multiple assignments.
Must be a high school graduate or the equivalent with a GED. Must have successfully completed Parkview Health Lab Support Services and Lab Assistant courses. Alternatives: Associate Degree in a laboratory science such as Chemistry, Microbiology or Biology or at least 24 hours of credit in a college level courses (evaluated by hiring manager) Or Vet tech or EMT/Paramedic Or Certified Medical Assistant. If the site requires full patient registration duties, the Patient Access classes should be completed and successfully passed during initial training period. Any specific procedure done that require additional training must be completed following those classes guidelines and time frames. Prefer Clinical lab experience. NOTE: Certified graduates of a recognized Clinical or Medical Lab Assistant program will not need to complete Parkview Health Lab Support Services or Lab Assistant courses.
Phlebotomy Certification (PBT - ASCP or other nationally recognized certifying body) preferred. Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Clinical Lab Assistant if applicable per the above listed education requirement. Lab assistants with a nursing home assignment must have a valid driver's license and daily access to a vehicle.
Previous computer/keyboarding experience preferred. 1 year experience in a medical setting preferred.
Must be able to lift 40 pounds, stand, sit or walk long distances if assigned in specific areas that require walking (phlebotomy). Medical terminology and pharmacology background recommended. Essential computer skills and knowledge of electronic medical records recommended. Good verbal and written communication skills required.
