The mission of USC Recreational Sports is to provide the university community with opportunities to pursue a balanced, healthy lifestyle through participation in recreational activities. Recreational Sports aims to support our members through fitness and recreational programming, leadership development, training and cross-unit collaboration. Recreational Sports includes the following programs: Intramural Sports, Club Sports, Fitness, Martial Arts, Outdoor Adventure Rentals, Youth Programs, Aquatics, Spirit Groups, Informal Recreational, Facility Membership and Special Events. Our staff works together to provide quality recreational programming, enhance the USC student experience, provide quality customer service, mentoring and professional development opportunities to full-time and student employees.

The Fitness Specialist will assist in the direction, organization, marketing, supervision and assessment of all aspects of a comprehensive Fitness program for students, faculty, and staff. This position will work directly with the Fitness Coordinator to develop the fitness program including, budget management, hiring, training and evaluating of 40-50 student workers, group exercise instructors, personal trainers and massage therapists.

Job Accountabilities

Oversee and manage the daily operation of all fitness programs at Lyon Center, USC Village and HSC Fitness Center, including USC Workout (60+ group exercise classes per week), personal training, private Pilates, and massage.
Review, communicate, track and assign all incoming personal training, massage and private yoga/Pilates session requests.
Organize, schedule and maintain USC Workout class schedules each semester.
Assist in the planning and implementation of current and new fitness activities and programs. Demonstrate the ability and necessary certification to teach group fitness classes.
Hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate all group exercise and private yoga/Pilates instructors, personal trainers and massage therapists. Provide leadership, guidance and supervision to all fitness personnel.
Enforce policies, guidelines, goals/objectives, and evaluations for specific fitness programs.
Manage expenditures and income within an approved budget.
Collaborate with other staff in the programming, marketing and communication of fitness related programs.
Develop and implement recruitment packages for new and existing fitness members at all facilities. Promote personal training and massage services.
Manage fitness inventory to prevent loss and minimize damage. Provide recommendations for equipment purchases in order to remain current with member demand and industry standards. Assist in overseeing the maintenance of weight room equipment.
Design, develop and assist with the coordination of special events related to fitness, health and wellness.
Assist in data collection and assessment of programs and fitness space utilization.
Assist in the development and implementation of risk management policies and procedures.
Assist in the planning and execution of special events related to fitness, wellness and health.
Preferred Qualifications

Education

Master’s degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology or related field
Experience

Two years’ experience in university recreation
Current group exercise and personal training certifications
Familiarity with group exercise instruction, fitness programming and fitness equipment operation

Minimum Education: - Bachelor's degree - Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education Minimum Experience: - 2 years Minimum Field of Expertise: - Student personnel administration
