As part of Health Services Advisory Group’s Internship Program, the Research & Advanced Analytics Intern participates as an active team member of a project focused on supporting the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services measure development and strategic planning contracts related to healthcare quality measurement and policy. The intern will be assigned a project to contribute to during the 10-16 week paid internship period. The project will provide the intern with experience performing research and/or analytic activities. The internship can take one of two tracks depending on skillset and preference. The analytics track will focus on the use of healthcare data which may include but are not limited to medical and prescription drug claims, eligibility, disease management, vital statistics, electronic health records (EHRs), surveys, home health, and nursing home data. During the internship, the intern on the analytic track will assist in designing statistical analysis plans, case selection criteria, and reporting parameters. The research track will focus on research and writing including literature reviews, environmental scans, materials for subject matter experts, policy briefs, and a variety of other evidence- and/or policy-focused materials. All interns work in a team environment with other team members, including directors, managers, support staff, and analysts.
ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Actively participates in all intern-related training activities provided by Health Services Advisory Group (HSAG).
Attends and participates in team, staff, and project meetings.
Ability to make presentations and communicate project results to staff.
Represents HSAG in a professional manner at all times.
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Able to handle several projects simultaneously and work with multiple teams.
Experience in the use of a statistical programming package (i.e., SAS, R, Stata, and/or SPSS). SAS experience preferred. If not experienced in SAS, must be willing to learn SAS during the internship to conduct and interpret primary analyses, conduct secondary and exploratory analyses. The majority of HSAG’s analytic work is performed using SAS.
Proficient in developing appropriate statistical models, determining adequate sample sizes, manipulating complex databases, and tracking and evaluating patterns of care and outcomes.
Experience working with databases.
Proficient in identification, critical review, and synthesis of scientific and policy-related healthcare literature.
Conceptualize and draft reports supported by tables, charts, and text.
Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
A recent graduate or graduate student pursing a Master’s degree in a healthcare-related discipline such as public health, related social science, business, economics, math, or statistics.
