East Carolina University is recruiting for a Technology Specialist within the Network Engineering team to provide technical assistance in network system planning, configuration, deployment, maintenance, trouble-shooting and security of university network services. These services require a high level of availability and system security as they are critical to the functions of the university.
The main responsibilities of this position are to provide the day-to-day management, design, deployment, maintenance, automation, disaster recovery and troubleshooting of various enterprise-level network services for both Main campus and the Health Sciences campus. This position is responsible for moderately complex configuration, installation, tuning and maintenance of the campus network core routing, distribution and access layers as well as associated systems. Support includes moderately complex troubleshooting and resolving network connectivity issues with enterprise wireless, VoIP, datacenter servers, access control systems, software and infrastructure related problems with switches, routers, wireless technologies and power conditioning devices. This position monitors and analyzes the network system via various operating system and monitoring tools in order to determine baseline performances, bottlenecks or performance degradation. This position manages moderately complex projects and tasks related to implementation of critical network infrastructure, new construction, and building renovations.
The employee in this position is responsible for forming and maintaining strategic technology contacts and partnerships with university departments, key technology suppliers, vendors and contractors. This position is responsible for the planning, cost containment, configuration, optimization, maintenance, security, and scalable implementation of current and emerging technologies. This individual is also responsible for procuring and maintaining various support agreements and contracts as well as verifying data, report writing, summarizing and reconciling information or financial data, data collection and analysis, research and inventory. Employee maintains current knowledge of software or hardware changes and plans changes appropriately in response to business needs. This is a mission critical position that directly affects nearly all university staff, faculty and students.
Employees adjust their standard work schedule to meet the requirements of their position, which includes and not limited to evening and weekend hours to perform scheduled and unscheduled workload requirements to maintain University operations.
Duties require On-Call responsibilities.
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and additional one year of experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or Electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of networking related experience with a focus on network design, engineering, analysis, and network management.
The desired candidate should possess a strong foundation and have considerable knowledge of the principles, protocols, and practices of moderately complex network concepts including: host to host communications, IP routing, switching, wireless technologies, firewalls and VPNs. Hands-on network engineering experience with Cisco infrastructure is preferred. Knowledge and experience working with the TCP/IP protocol suite. Experience with: fiber optics, Ethernet, switching, wireless protocols, network analyzers, Power over Ethernet (PoE), Voice over IP (VoIP), IT construction standards, network management solutions, and power management are desirable. CCENT and/or CCT certifications completed or renewed within the last 5 years are desirable; CCNA and/or CCNP certifications completed or renewed within the last 5 years are most desirable.
Possesses the ability to successfully manage short and long-term projects with moderate complexity that includes coordination with internal and external resources. Knowledge of waterfall and agile project management methodologies are desirable.
Excellent oral and written communication skills are strongly desired as well as the ability to work as an independent, productive, responsible, self-motivated member of a team in high-pressure situations.
