The instructional assistant is employed by John Muir Charter Schools and is responsible for supporting classroom instruction and increasing one-on-one learning opportunities of youth participating in the Rancho Cielo Youth Campus Culinary and Construction Academies. Rancho Cielo and JMCS’s innovative education programs are designed to provide youth, ages 16-25, with an engaging educational experience that meets individual needs.We combine direct instruction, project work, credit recovery, life skills, culinary and construction training and other academic experiences into a highly personalized high school classroom.These classroom activities are combined with top notch vocational training provided by Rancho Cielo in either a culinary or a construction academy. There is a self-contained classroom for each academy and the Instructional Assistant will provide support for both classrooms.

The program is looking for an instructional assistant to help supplement the classroom instruction and provide some more one-on-one and small group opportunities to the students. Please see below for more details about the position.

This position includes the following duties:

  • Support classroom instruction of young adults between the ages of 16 and 24, most of whom have had significant breaks in the high school education.
  • Instruct students one-on-one and in small groups in basic Math and English
  • Support staff with grading and maintaining gradebook
  • Work closely with the JMCS and Rancho Cielo team to integrate each program component into the classroom.
  • Support graduation requirements and successful completion for students
  • Support students following all policies and procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality of information regarding students.
  • Filing and copying as needed
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree or minimum of two years of college
  • Ability to tutor Math, English and general high school subjects with minimal supervision
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively as a part of a team.
  • Ability to motivate, encourage, and support young adults from a wide variety of social, educational and economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to build relationships with education providers
  • Motivation to work with opportunity youth.
  • Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills (conflict resolution, counseling, coaching)
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff.
  • Computer literacy (Windows, Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and diplomacy on the job.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimum supervision and manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making effective decisions and in problem solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Passing score or ability to pass the CBEST.
  • Strong mathematics background and demonstrated ability to tutor Math

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is required to walk; use hands to operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Perform simple grasping and fine manipulation. There are normal office working conditions and associated physical demands. For example, on a continuous basis, sit at a desk using a computer and in meetings for long periods of time. Intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk, as well as, repetitive finger movements with office and computer machinery. May be expected to lift and move containers weighing up to 40 lbs.

Benefits and Compensation:
The salary range is $15.38 to $17.80 per hour with partial benefits.
