The Director Project Management reports through the Vice President of Pipeline Management and works closely with the Oncology therapeutic area (TA) head & leadership providing cross‑functional operational and strategic management for a portfolio of drug development projects. In addition, the Director will lead a team of Project Managers.
Oversee project and portfolio management across the assigned TA
Oversee pipeline planning, resource and capacity management activities within the TA
Ensure effective pipeline analysis, tracking, portfolio analytics and pipeline sustainability modeling
Drive use of PM tools and systems and risk management by project managers and deliver key output for project & resource management by TA leadership team
Oversee management of key external alliances from Research through Development
Build and manage relationships with key stakeholders in the TA in order to optimally deliver projects based on robust science and plans
Collaborate with Senior Leadership, governance bodies, and cross-functional areas
Develop talent on team to ensure ability to handle increasingly complex projects and succession planning
Recruit, lead, motivate, manage, coach and retain a high performing team; create an environment in which employees can successfully achieve professional growth
Pipeline Management & Leadership
Member of the Pipeline Management leadership team providing direction for the project management group and mentoring/leading project managers and alliance managers within the assigned TA
Oversees development and execution of improvement initiatives within project management and partners with other departments within MedImmune and AstraZeneca (AZ) to gain buy-in and ensure new processes and procedures meet organizational goals
Assess, develop, and implement tools designed to facilitate operational excellence initiatives within project management
Leads and contributes to the development of the functional project strategy, therapeutic area strategy and portfolio management
Leads translation of strategy into project plans and deliverables, communicates plans to TA-oversight and governance where appropriate
Coordinates closely with other project leads (to identify and exploit best practices in management, cross-portfolio opportunities, and joint strategy and planning)
Understands competitive benchmarks for Disease Area and Therapy Area for cycle times, internal costs and risks
Challenges team and functional representatives on assumptions for time, costs and risk to optimize the product development plan
Ability to create, coordinate, and maintain an integrated product plan and to control or respond to changes in strategy and scope
Working knowledge of project management software solutions, including skills in critical path analysis. MS Project and/or Planisware experience is an advantage
Understanding of financial and resource planning systems and processes and ability to coordinate project-level budget/resource estimates and manage actuals vs. plan
Ability to manage teams and individuals in a matrix environment, ability to track team performance against objectives, use of effective meeting management tools and techniques, and knowledge of decision-making and conflict resolution techniques
Ability to maintain project information, and to integrate and distribute appropriate information to senior management and team members
Shares best practices to ensure consistency and rigor in processes, data analysis, and decision-making across the project teams
Alliance Management (AM) & External Collaborations/Engagement of External Experts
May serve as the lead for complex alliances/academic collaborations and guides PMs on alliances within their TA
Partners with legal, business development, Strategic Sourcing, and finance representatives to serve as the knowledge expert on contractual obligations; ensures that financial and reporting obligations are captured and monitored
Ensures necessary infrastructure needs are met for interactions with the partner/collaborator
Maintains regular communications with the alliance partner/collaborator ensuring lines of communication are open
Previous experience will include:
Demonstrated ability to lead a project management organization
Knowledge of the interdependencies in the drug development processes with demonstrated ability to oversee and coordinate multiple projects and alliances that are running concurrently
Possess strong team leadership and collaboration skills
Proven commitment to stakeholder satisfaction and the highest ethical standards
Relationship management and demonstrated influencing skills for strategic cross-functional and critical projects
Strong knowledge of project management principles, practices, tools and methodologies
Results driven, with a strategic orientation; have an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit and be comfortable multi-tasking and working in a fast-paced environment
Possess excellent communications skills and cross-cultural awareness, as he/she is required for dealing with diverse internal and external constituents
Be open, honest, fair - a person of integrity who demonstrates respect for all individuals; someone who can be trusted and depended on for guidance; committed
Must be a leader and a manager, with the knowledge and experience to "get things done"; should have the ability to set high but reachable goals and clearly communicate those goals
Exercises appreciable autonomy in thought, action, and decisions
Masters/Ph.D. or equivalent preferred, Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent required. 10 - 13 years related industry experience along with 3 - 4 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, and programs or directing the allocation of resources
Supervision: High level of independence, meets requirements outlined above with minimal supervision and the ability to manage direct reports.
