Under immediate supervision, performs responsible semi-skilled work relating to accurately reading water meters, re-reading water bills that are in dispute, finding water meters that are covered with debris, dirt, etc. All work is in electronic format, must be fluent with hand held devices, and laptop computers.
Examples of Duties:
Receives service orders by cycle and route from dispatch to mobile computer. Typical service orders are as follows: Meter reading route usually consist of 360 meters per day, per reader.
Re-reads (reading that the computer rejects must be read again to ensure accuracy).
Meter covered (is the code for meters that must be manually located to get a reading).
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a diploma from high school and some experience relating to water meters, reading, computers.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: General knowledge of computers, methods and tools used, principles of water meter operation, ability to follow oral and written direction. Accurately read 360 meters per day, must be able to lift 50 lbs, walk 5 miles, work from a kneeling position, work and drive in any weather condition for the entire shift. Must have the ability to meet and deal effectively with the public. Hours are subject to shift work.
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
This position requires routine driving and is classified as safety sensitive under the city's Drug Free Workplace policy.
There will be a 6 month probationary period with performance evaluations after 3
months of work and at the end of the probationary period.
