The Director of Jewish Studies and Hebrew will lead all aspects of Judaism at Wornick expressed both in and outside of the classroom. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Director of Jewish Studies and Hebrew will not only supervise the entire Jewish Studies and Hebrew team, but will serve as a voice representing Judaism at the administrative level and will advise on all policies and programs at the school. Included in this responsibility will be the ability to work alongside the Head of School and Assistant Head of School to create a structure within the Hebrew and Jewish Studies department that allow for mid level leadership and empowerment of future teacher leaders. The formal responsibilities of the Director of Jewish Studies and Hebrew will include:
- Mentoring and supervising all Jewish Studies and Hebrew teachers at the school
- Overseeing development and evaluation of curriculum in the Hebrew and Jewish Studies department
- Teaching one class per year
- Setting a vision for the Tefillah program and assigning leadership in faculty to participate in Tefillah program
- Work with Head of School and Senior Leadership Team to create a vision for the celebration of Jewish holidays and life cycle events
- Planning and leading professional development for Jewish Studies and Hebrew team members
- Participating in scheduling and planning for the school year to ensure adequate time is allocated for Jewish Studies and Hebrew teachers to prepare for classes and holidays
- Collaborate with the Assistant Head of School and Educational Leadership Team to create school wide communication and participation in content and holiday programming.
- Coordinate Israel trip
- Ensuring that curriculum writing and scope and sequence creation for the Jewish Studies team are a constant process that includes revision, reiteration and conceptualization.
Qualifications
- Masters Degree in Jewish Studies, Jewish Education or related field/ OR Rabbinic Ordination
- 7+ years of experience in Jewish Education (teaching done while in Rabbinic training or during a graduate degree can count towards this total)
- A proven track record of leadership, innovation and initiative training at previous Jewish institutions
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Fluency in Hebrew is strongly preferred. (A significant portion of our Jewish Studies and Hebrew teachers are native Hebrew speakers)
- Knowledge and familiarity with Jewish denominational differences in liturgy and practice as well as an understanding of contemporary trends and directions in Jewish life and education
